Lancashire Lightning take on Durham Dynamos in the second match on the opening day of the Vitality T20 Blast 2024.
With 24 wins and 11 losses, Lancashire are way ahead on the overall head to head stats, but Durham have done well in the recent past winning 3 out of the most recent five matches that had a result. Lancashire Lightning’s run in their own backyard at Old Trafford, Manchester has been extraordinary, winning as many as 13 out of 19 games to have been held here, but, again, Durham have showed some good away form to bridge the gap winning 2 of the most recent 5 games held at this venue.
Several T20 stars from both sides missing in action will take a lot away from this encounter, and fans will especially the glam appeal that superstars like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone and the like bring to the competition. However this should still be an interesting match with both teams looking to shake off their rustiness and begin an exhilarating season of T20 cricket.

Despite finishing the group stage as one of the two table-toppers, Lancashire went down to inaugural champions Surrey in the first quarterfinal last year that brought their championship hopes to an end.
Chasing 188 for victory, Jos Buttler and Steven Croft were on pace and kept their team in the game till the fifteenth over of the chase, but they couldn’t quite wrap things up and Lancashire eventually lost by a small margin of 13 runs. Lancashire’s season opener kicks off this week and they’ll be without the services of several key personnel from last year. Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, the incendiary opening pair, will be facing international attacks in English colours over at the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States.
Similarly, Liam Livingstone and handy left arm spinner Tom Hartley will be missing in action. Another key player they’ll need to do without is Kiwi import Daryl Mitchell who last season gave their team four overs with the ball in hand almost every match and slotted in nicely as a middle order bat. But Colin de Grandhomme could take his place in the side as a like for like replacement.
Overall, there’s plenty of holes to plug with several capped players stars away on national duty playing in a world cup. It remains to be seen how Lancashire Lightning’s second-string side will perform with a new combination of players.
Luke Wells, Keaton Jennings (C), Josh Bohannon, George Bell, Tom Bruce, George Balderson, Matthew Hurst, Thomas Aspinwall, Tom Bailey, Jack Morley, Saqib Mahmood.

A mediocre performance from Durham last season where they eked out just 4 wins from 14 games saw them finish their season in the bottom of the table. Having not qualified in the prior two seasons, Durham opened their last season with a bang, winning 3 out of their first 4 games, but they lost their way thereafter. They dropped down to the bottom of the table, and couldn’t recover in time before the doors to playoff shut on them.
A disappointing campaign last year also saw them settle for a tie in a couple of close matches. The other teams in the competition last year were making good progress and even if the result of those two close matches had gone Dorham’s way, they wouldn’t have sealed their berth in the deciders. But, Durham would be hoping to put all the disappointment of the past few seasons behind, and approach this year’s campaign with a fresh mindset. They’ve got some good overseas talent to bank on, namely Ashton Turner and Ben Dwarshuis who’s come in for the injured Scott Boland.
It’ll be interesting to see which overseas players they’ll pick to start in the XI. There are options though David Bedingham is in some serious form with the red ball, and Colin Ackermann is a decent player in the white ball format.
Alex Lees, Colin Ackermann, Ashton Tuner, Ben Stokes, Oliver Robinson, Graham Clark, Paul Coughlin, Callum Parkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, and Ben Dwarshuis.

The decks at Manchester have generally been excellent for batting especially during the beginning of the T20 season, and it looks like it won’t be any different. But the weather doesn’t exude much confidence, with showers forecast for game day.

The Emirates Old Trafford stadium in Manchester will host this clash between Lancashire and Durham. The Lightning will be more than pleased to take on the Dynamos at a ground where they’ve dominated them with 13 wins and 6 losses in 19 matches.
Batting first and posting a massive score on board has been the way to go at Old Trafford, Manchester over the years. And, from the looks of it, teams will be itching to win toss and bat first- to make the best use of conditions on offer. But the overheads will be taken into consideration, as chasing gives you a leg up in rain curtailed matches.
Lancashire Lightning have the upper hand in this contest. Even though plenty of their regular players are away and won’t take part in this competition until the last phase, Lancashire seem to have all their bases covered.
We are backing Lancashire Lightning as winners of this contest.
