Unless Middlesex pulls out something remarkable, it looks like their season this year in the Royal London One-Day Cup is over. They are currently 7th in the Group A points table with just 3 points and a net run rate of -0.189. Not only will they need to win their remaining two group games by significant margins, but other results must also go their way if they are to make the playoffs. Middlesex’s next match is against Lancashire at Lord’s tomorrow. Lancashire are currently in 6th place with 6 points. Three teams are tied at 6 points in the Group A table currently, and Lancashire will be hoping to clear away from the muddle by winning this match.

Middlesex ed their first victory of the season earlier this week when they beat Nottinghamshire by a massive margin of 134 runs. It looked like that huge win might help them turn their season around, but unfortunately, they were defeated by Leicestershire in their next match by 23 runs (via the DLS method), which has again made things difficult for them.
Middlesex has been led down by their inconsistent batting. Ryan Higgins (217 runs in 5 innings at an average of 43.40 and a strike rate of 127.64) is their highest run-getter this season, and is followed by captain Mark Stoneman (197 runs in 5 innings at 39.40). However, they haven’t gotten much from the others.
Sam Robson played a fine knock of 58 from 68 balls in the match against Leicestershire yesterday, but none of the others stood up, and Middlesex was eventually bundled out for just 191. That has largely been their story this year.
The team’s bowling performance has been a tad better, with leg-spinner Luke Hollman (9 wickets in 5 innings at an economy of just 4.58) leading the way. Fast bowler Ethan Bamber has done an excellent job as well, picking up 8 wickets at 4.95. The young quick has kept things tight with the new ball and is fresh off a spell of 3-27 in 10 overs against Leicestershire.

Lancashire are coming off a commanding 10-wicket win against Surrey at Woodbridge Road. They bowled Surrey out for just 153 after opting to field first, and then romped home without losing a wicket in just 22.1 overs. Openers George Bell (78* off 59 balls) and Keaton Jennings (76* off 74 balls) made sure there were no hiccups in the chase and gave the team those valuable two points.
Skipper Jennings has led from the front this year and is topping the team’s batting charts with 247 runs in 5 innings at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of almost 103. George Bell (193 runs in 5 innings at 48.25) and Josh Bohannon (178 runs in 4 innings at 44.50) have been among the runs as well.
Will Williams was the wrecker-in-chief for Lancashire in the previous game with a super spell of 4-30 from 7 overs. The fast bowler has now taken his season’s tally of wickets to 9 with an impressive economy rate of 5.37. He has shared the new ball with Jack Blatherwick, who has also had a fantastic season, capturing 10 wickets at an economy of 5.85. George Balderson (7 wickets in 4 innings at 4.55) is another bowler we feel can make an impact.

Lord's usually provides a balanced fight between bat and ball. It is known for favoring seam movement early on, making the new ball a crucial asset for fast bowlers. However, as the match progresses, the pitch tends to flatten out, providing a good batting surface for stroke play. With the weather expected to be nice and warm, the pitch should dry out and become friendlier to batters.
This will be the first match of the Royal London One-Day Cup 2023 to be played at Lord’s. In fact, the last time the venue hosted matches from the tournament was back in 2019. The average score batting first at Lord’s in One-Day cricket is 237. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 300–310 runs.
Lord’s usually offers an even contest. Teams batting second have fared slightly better here in One-Day cricket. We feel that the team winning the toss in this match will choose to field first.
Lancashire have won three of the last five matches they have played against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup. They are playing better cricket than Middlesex this year and will have the edge in this encounter owing to their superior batting. Middlesex’s batting has been inconsistent, and they might struggle against Lancashire’s in-form seam bowlers on this pitch. If they lose a few early wickets, they might find it really tough to make a comeback.
We are backing Lancashire as the winners of this match.
