Lancashire Lightning will take on Middlesex in the Group A clash of One Day Cup 2024 at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 8th August 2024 at 3:30 pm. Already down and out, Lancashire Lightning have suffered five defeats in five matches and has the worst NRR among 18 teams across Group A and B. Middlesex, on the other hand, still have hopes of making it to the playoffs with 5 points in 5 matches so far.
The tournament is past the midway mark, and any team, while already a foot in the knockouts, would like to strengthen their hold on the spot. Meanwhile, teams like Lancashire that have no chance of making it to knockout would like to salvage some pride. Middlesex would be happy to be facing Lancashire at this juncture and should get past them easily.

Lancashire have underperformed in all departments in the One Day Cup 2024. They have no wins to show for the 5 match effort so far in the season, have the worst NRR and look completely down and out. It would be an understatement to say that their bowling failed to turn up this season. Their top wicket-takers have 4 wickets each, whereas the tournament's top wicket-taker has 15 wickets.
The margin of defeats has also been a matter of concern for Lancashire Lightening. Barring a close 5-run loss against Kent, all their defeats have been pretty comprehensive. The 9-wicket loss with over 30 overs to spare against Derbyshire was the worst of the lot.
In their previous game against Hampshire, bowling first, Lancashire restricted the opposition to a below-par score of 222 for 8. All six bowlers who bowled in the game got at least one wicket. The chase was horrible, though. Despite Chris Green century down the order, the rest of the batting unit could not manage 50 runs combined, getting bundled out for 151 and losing the match by 71 runs.
This season, their top players are Captain Josh Bohannon, Chris Green and Will Williams. All of them would need to be in top form to defeat Lancashire in this game.
Key players: Josh Bohannon, Chris Green, Will Williams, Charlie Barnard

Middlesex started the season with a couple of losses against Worcestershire and Derbyshire. Both losses were huge—by 183 runs and by 9 wickets with about 7 overs to spare. They somehow found form against Northamptonshire to defeat them 5 wickets and then went to another big win against Kent by 5 wickets with over 112 balls to spare.
They would rue the washout against Durham as they lost an excellent opportunity to win 2 points. In the previous completed game against Kent, Middlesex restricted the opposition to just 204 in the 45th over. Joshua De Caires and Nathan Fernandes took two wickets each. Most of the bowlers were economical in this low-scoring game. Barring Ishaan Kaushal, no bowler went over 5 runs an over. The chase proved easy with opener Joe Cracknell top scoring with 88 off just 82 balls. Robbie White, too got to a fifty in 47 balls to help Middlesex win the match in the 32nd over.
This is probably the easiest game for Middlesex this season. They have done well to be in a position to make the knockouts. As long as they do the basics right, Middlesex should get over the line in this match against bottom-placed Lancashire.
Key players: Joe Cracknell, Mark Stoneman, Robbie White, Henry Brookes

The venue for the match is Old Trafford, Manchester. Established in 1857, the stadium has a seating capacity of about 19000 spectators. Lancashire have a home advantage here. Hopefully, their pursuit of the first win of the season will end here.
This will be the first match at Manchester this season. In ODI cricket at Old Trafford, the teams batting second have won slightly more matches compared to the ones defending the total. The team winning the toss should bowl first here.
All teams should fancy their chances against Lancashire this season. They are not only the worst team in Group A but are the worst team across groups. Middlesex have come back stronger after early hiccups and would be delighted at the prospect of playing Lancashire at a time when they are trying to cement a place in the knockouts. Unless something terribly goes wrong, Middlesex should defeat Lancashire in this crucial game.
We predict that Lancashire Lightening will defeat Middlesex.
