The CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One has reached its final stage. Western Province are currently sitting firmly at the top of the table with 25 points. Right below them are Warriors who have earned 18 points from their six games. Titans, meanwhile, are in fourth place with 13 points and have one game left. Realistically, it seems rather unlikely that they will end up in the top two, as their net run rate stands at a poor -0.001. However, they have one last chance to improve their place in the points table when they take on Lions in their final league game at the Wanderers. Lions are in fifth place with 11 points and are out of the finals race.

Lions would certainly be disappointed with their performance this year. They won the title last season and were one of the favorites this time. Unfortunately, they lost three of their first four games, one of which was abandoned. They have gained some momentum at the back end of the season, winning two games on the trot. However, it’s a little too late now. The defending champions would now be aiming to finish their season with a comprehensive win.
Lions are coming off a thumping 75-run victory against North West in Potchefstroom. After posting a formidable 304-7 on the board, they bowled the opposition out for just 229.
Openers Joshua Richards and Ryan Rickelton paved the way for the big total with two fluent fifties. Richards is now the team’s highest run-getter this season, with 185 runs from 5 innings at an average of 37. Rickelton, meanwhile, has managed 175 runs at an average of 35.
Middle-order batter Mitchell Van Buuren is next on the list with 167 runs in 5 innings at an average of 41.75. He has smashed two fifties so far and would be eager to have another one in the final match.
Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin has been the Lions’ most successful bowler this year, grabbing 7 wickets in 6 innings at an average of 25.85. Wiaan Mulder, whose 3-29 against North West proved to be a game-changer, has taken his season’s tally to 5 scalps at 37.40.

Titans, too, have had a forgettable season this time. They have won three and lost three, but would have liked to do a lot better. However, they still have a chance to end on third place.
Titans are coming off a two-wicket loss to Western Province at Centurion. Batting first, they could manage only 217 and, while they had their moments while bowling, they couldn’t quite finish the job.
For Titans, three batters have stood out this season: Donovan Ferreira (353 runs at an average of 70.60), Dewald Brevis (348 runs at 58), and captain Dean Elgar (323 runs at 107).
Brevis smashed an outstanding 116 off 117 balls in the match against Western Province. He is an exciting young batter and can serve Titans for many seasons to come. We back him to score another impactful knock here.
After these three, though, the rest of the batting unit has completely failed to put their hands up. This has hurt them badly throughout the season.
On the bowling front, fast bowler Junior Dala (8 wickets in 6 innings at an average of 32.50) has been the most successful. Left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso (7 wickets in 6 innings at 30.14) has also impressed and is worth backing as he consistently delivers.

The Wanderers typically features a hard and true pitch. The true bounce here will be relished by the fast bowlers. There will also be lateral movement on offer for them. Batters too will enjoy the bounce here, as it will allow them to play their strokes freely on all sides. They will, however, need to negate the initial few overs from the fast bowlers cautiously.
The weather in Johannesburg will be clear and warm, with plenty of sunshine.
The average first inning score in this tournament at the Wanderers is 247. The highest total chased here is 334-6 by Warriors against Titans earlier this season. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 270-280 runs.
Two completed games have been played at the Wanderers Stadium this year in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One; both have been won by the team chasing. In ODI cricket too, the ground is known to favor the chasing side. So the team winning the toss is likely to field first.
Lions have won four of their previous five encounters against Titans. Titans last defeated Lions in March of 2020. The season has been disappointing for both teams, but this is their chance to finish on a high. Titans will again depend on their three in-form batters to deliver. Lions have a decent batting unit, but their bowling hasn’t exactly looked threatening. On paper, Titans look like the stronger side. However, the confidence from the last two wins might just help Lions take Titans down again. We feel that on this true pitch, Titans’ strong batting can help them overcome their opponents.
Back Titans as the winners of this match.
