Some cricket pundits consider the T20 Blast group stage to drag on a little and for many teams there can be a feeling that their place in the top four or out of it is already decided long before the conclusion of those matches. However, once the quarter finals arrive, there can be no doubt that every ball counts and there is very little room for error in this clash.
Northants Steelbacks have the advantage of home which could go a long way as Somerset are so well backed at home in Taunton. The Steelbacks also come into this match after winning their final three games in the group stage and if they can put out their best XI then they will certainly be competitive.
Somerset can rightly claim to be one of the great county sides over recent years across all formats and their strong batting has been a feature of their success so do not be surprised if their middle or lower order bails them out if required in this game.

In spite of having a squad of players who value the importance of team over individuals, Northants will be putting a lot of hope into a quad of players ahead of this match - South African opener Matthew Breetzke, former England internationals Ravi Bopara and David Willey, as well as Australian all-format all-rounder Ashton Agar.
Breetzke was the leading run scorer in the group stage for his side who have been working on a late-deal to bring him back from Potchefstroom for this match, and hopefully finals day, where he has been taking on Sri Lanka A for South Africa A.
David Willey is considered as one of England's most underrated white ball internationals over the last decade and the captain is a prize player with both bat and ball in this tournament.

Although Somerset were thrashed in their final South Group game of the Vitality Blast back in mid-July, they came up against an inspire Kiran Carlson at the top of the order for Glamorgan and their place in the quarter finals had already been assured.
That said, there will be no room for error against a well-drilled Northants Steelback side and we expect Somerset to arrive at the County Ground with a positive and attacking mentality shown with both bat and ball.
They will be without Australian international Riley Meredith who has been called up for the T20I series in Scotland but in Craig Overton, Jack Leach, Ben Green and Jake Ball, Somerset still boast an attack full of international caps.
With the bat, the two Toms in the top three, Banton and Kohler-Core will be crucial for Somerset getting off to a strong start.

Humid conditions are forecast throughout this quarter final clash but any rain is expected to arrive after the conclusion of the game. There could be showers earlier in the morning but that should not effect the outfield which we expect to be fast.

The County Ground in Northampton has enjoyed a spell of dry weather over the last week but due to an overall cool summer the pitch will not be showing a huge amount of wear and will not turn extravagantly. The ball will come onto the bat a good pace and we expect whoever bats first to look to post a total of 195+.
Teams batting first have had the most success in Northampton during the 2024 Vitality Blast and it would be a big surprise if either captain won the toss on Thursday evening and chose to field first.
Although Northants Steelbacks lost one fewer game in the group stage than Somerset and have home advantage in this quarter-final, the men from the South West have a fantastic recent record in the T20 Blast. With a squad full of white-ball match-winners, we expect to see Somerset advancing to Finals Day at Edgbaston.
