Confident Aussies take on slightly circumspect Kiwis in the second test match of the Trans-Tasman trophy? The trophy is gone, but will New Zealand level the series? Or will Australia add to their tally of wins on NZ soil?

  • Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon were outstanding for the visitors with both bat and ball at different stages of the game.
  • Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell are going to key for the hosts’ chances in this test match.
  • Australia have won five out of five test matches that they played against New Zealand recently.

Our prediction is for Australia to win this contest.

In their last five games against New Zealand, Australia hasn't lost once. They've won all five encounters, and a common theme in four of those five crushing wins is how they set the pace batting first.

Every time they walk out to toss, they go with clear intentions: bat first, bat big and get to a winning position. A week ago, they followed the same blueprint at the Basin Reserve, Wellington to another huge victory with a staggering difference of 172 runs. But the Kiwis made life difficult for them with some spending bowling on the first day. After a serious setback, Cameron Green produced a first innings master class to take the visitors to safety but the hosts found their way back in with a brilliant fightback in the second innings where they bowled the Aussies out cheaply for 160.

And just when it appeared like the hosts were on course to building a nice base for chasing down a daunting target, veteran offie Nathan Lyon ran through the Kiwis batting line-up and killed the chase, spinning the Aussies to victory.

New Zealand Preview

New Zealand's first Test against Australia was a story of missed opportunities and familiar struggles. They started strong with the ball, dismissing half the Australian side with the scoreboard reading 156.

But a valiant 174-run knock by Cameron Green, who stitched together a 104-run partnership with Josh Hazelwood, for the last wicket took the visitors to 383. In reply, the hosts could only manage a measly 179 runs in the first innings. They needed something special with the ball in the second innings, and their bowlers delivered it with Glenn Phillips, in particular, using the helpful conditions skillfully to pick up a five-wicket haul on a spin-friendly surface. Restricting Australia to around 160 meant New Zealand weren’t set a daunting total over 400 as target.

Needing 369 for victory, the kiwis set out to get a decent start. But Lyon and Head combined to take out the top order with just around 60 on board. A promising partnership blossomed between Ravindra and Mitchell, but Nathan Lyon intervened again striking blows at regular intervals. The Blackcaps should address their batting woes and get Mitchell Santner into the playing XI to take advantage of Aussies’ mounting spin issues. The Kiwis are known for their fightbacks but their next encounter against Australia will demand a much-improved performance, especially with the bat.

They'll need to find ways to counter Lyon's spin threat and capitalize on any chances they create. Only then can they hope to break their winless streak against Australia at home.

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Tom Latham, Will Young, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (wk), Glenn Phillips, Scott Kuggeleijn, Matt Henry, Tim Southee (c), William ORourke.

Australia Preview

Normal service resumes for Aussies as they continue to pummel Black Caps in the longer format of the game. They’ve won on all six occasions they’ve faced New Zealand on NZ soil, with that crushing 172-run win at the Basin Reserve, Wellington.

Cam Green and Nathan Lyon were the heroes for the visitors, with the Western Australian all-rounder bringing up his career best score in test cricket and the Southern Australian off spinner Nathan Lyon making a rare feat. With this match haul at Wellington last week, he ed the elite club of Muralitharan and Warne to have picked up 10 wickets in a match in as many as nine different countries.

Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon put up strong performances, even as Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, and Alex Carey struggled to score runs, but the Australians didn’t feel the heat because the Kiwis, too, faltered with their batting. Even though New Zealand’s bowling was as good as Australia’s, the superior fielding of the Australians, particularly their ability to hold onto catches, proved to be a game-changer.

Going into the final match of the test summer, away from home, Aussies will be looking to wrap things up professionally with a dominant display on the field, and with the ball and bat.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Weather Conditions

Clearly, Hagley Oval has on offer some of the best batting decks on NZ soil. It doesn’t provide as much bounce as the Basin Reserve surface did, but it sure does have some ripping pace in it for bowlers to exploit. The forecast looks good, with sunny and pleasant weather expected for the most part.

NZ vs AUS Pitch Report

The match will be played at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Australia and New Zealand played a test match here in 2016, where the run aggregate went north of 1400 runs, with New Zealand posting 300+ totals on both innings , and Australia making a mammoth 505 in the first and calmly chasing 201 for victory with 7 wickets to spare.

Toss: To Bat

Toss doesn’t make a heavy difference on this surface, so neither team will carry an advantage to the third and fourth innings. But New Zealand have always preferred to choose to field first, bat big and put pressure on the opposition.

New Zealand may have won 9 of their 12 matches here in the last 10 years, but facing Australia who have yet to lose a match here in this decade is an incredibly hard challenge. Our money is on the Aussies.

Our prediction is for Australia to win this contest.
