It will be a battle between the top and bottom-placed sides in the Sheffield Shield 2023/24 as Queensland clash with Tasmania at the Gabba on February 3. Queensland is languishing at the bottom of the table, while Tasmania have established themselves at the top. Can Queensland turn their fortunes around? Let’s find out.
Queensland have managed just one win from the six games they have played so far; they have lost three and drawn two. They drew their last match against Western Australia, which would have given them some confidence.
Queensland’s batting has been in good health this season, with as many as six batters having scored over 300 runs. Their best batsman has been opener Joe Burns, who has amassed 437 runs in 11 innings at an average of 43.70 with the help of one century and two fifties.
Following him closely are Matt Renshaw (348 runs in 11 innings at 31.63) and Jimmy Peirson (361 runs in 10 innings at 36.10).
Usman Khawaja, who has just finished the Test series against West Indies, is expected to re the squad. However, it’s uncertain whether he will play this game.
Among the bowlers, you should watch out for Gurinder Sandhu (21 wickets in 10 innings at 25.71) and Mitchell Swepson (19 wickets in 10 innings at 32.31). Right arm fast bowler Mark Steketee is also in good form and is fresh off a spell of 4-50 in the previous game against Western Australia.

Tasmania suffered their first loss of this season in their previous game where they were defeated by New South Wales by 74 runs. Chasing 143 for win in a low-scoring encounter at Sydney, Tasmania were shot out for just 68 on an uneven pitch.
That loss wouldn’t perturb the team much, as they know they have the quality to excel on any decent pitch.
For Tasmania, the standout batters this season have been Beau Webster (498 runs in 9 innings at 71.14) and Charlie Wakim (443 runs in 11 innings at 40.27).
Another batter who has left a mark is captain Jordan Silk, who has scored 349 runs in 11 innings at an average of 38.77.
In the bowling department, you need not look any further than Lawrence Neil-Smith and Gabe Bell, who have taken 25 and 22 wickets, respectively. Both of them had an exceptional outing in the previous game against New South Wales and ended up with five-fors, with Smith taking 10 wickets in the match.

The Gabba in Brisbane is considered one of the quickest surfaces in Australia. It offers consistent bounce and swing and gets quicker as the game progresses. It will be the best for batting after the first session on Day 1. Spinners won’t get much help here, but seamers will ask questions to the batters throughout.
The weather in Brisbane will be very hot, with periods of clouds and sunshine on all four days.
The average score batting first in Test cricket at the Gabba is 352. In this season of the Sheffield Shield, the highest score posted at the venue has been the first innings score of 359-5 dec. by South Australia against Queensland after being asked to bat first. The team batting first here should look to set a score of over 350 runs to feel safe.
Only two matches have been played at the Gabba this season. The first one was won by the team batting first, while the second game was a drawn affair. As the pitch here is good for batting on the first two days, we think the team winning the toss will choose to bat first.
In the past five encounters between Queensland and Tasmania, both teams have claimed victory twice, while one match concluded in a draw. Tasmania will be feeling quite confident of their chances in this match, despite their stunning defeat in their previous game. We feel they will be determined to put that loss behind them and will come out strongly. This pitch will suit their well-balanced side. Queensland have a pretty decent squad as well, and if they play to their potential, they can surprise Tasmania. However, given the form they have shown of late, we feel Tasmania has the upper hand in this encounter.
Back Tasmania as the winners of this match.
