The 2023-24 season of the Sheffield Shield is now up and running. All six participating teams have played one game each so far, and only Tasmania and Western Australia have managed to victories. The two bottom-placed teams – Victoria and Queensland – will face off at the Great Barrier Reef Arena from October 14. Victoria suffered a massive innings defeat in their first game of the season, while Queensland drew theirs. Both now have a chance to get some crucial points on the board with a victory.

Queensland maintained a competitive edge last season but narrowly missed out on the finals. Their stable team is expected to contend for the title once more, and the addition of Ben McDermott from Tasmania could provide additional strength to their top-order if he can improve upon his average of just 18.30 from the previous summer.
Queensland’s first match of this season was against New South Wales, which ended in a draw. After being asked to bat first at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Queensland was dismissed for just 176. Despite that poor show in the first innings, they made a strong comeback in their second foray, amassing 417-7 after New South Wales had posted 446 in their response.
Michael Neser (140) and Jimmy Peirson (106) were the standout performers for Queensland in the previous game. Jack David Wildermuth got a valuable 52 not out as well down the order.
Queensland will be hoping for some big runs from Matt Renshaw. The talented opening batter scored a fluent 55 in the second innings of the previous match and would like to build on that performance. The experienced Usman Khawaja will miss the game against Victoria as he has been asked to rest by Cricket Australia. Jimmy Peirson will captain in Khawaja's absence, while Ben McDermott is poised for a Shield return.
On the bowling front, watch out for Mitchell Swepson. He averaged 39.66 in the Shield last summer but seems to be improving with every game. The leg-spinner ended up with figures of 3-73 in the previous match when the wicket was flat. He should do better as the season goes on.
Neser, who was among the top wicket-takers last season, will also have a crucial role to play with his seam bowling. He has started the season with a three-wicket haul already.

On a slow WACA pitch, Western Australia's second-strong bowling lineup dominated Victoria in their first match of the new Shied season to win the match by an innings and 53 runs. They first bowled out Victoria for 256 after opting to bowl first. Then they piled on 481 on the board and went on to bundle Victoria for a paltry 172.
Despite this loss, however, Victoria will know they have the team to make a comeback. Under new captain Will Sutherland, they have all the ingredients to make it to a third final in a row.
Peter Handscomb will, of course, be their main batter to watch out for. Last season, he plundered 634 runs in just 6 matches with a highest of an unbeaten 281. He failed in the previous game, but we feel he will make a strong impact in this match.
The return of Will Pucovski has also strengthened their top-order batting significantly.
Opener Travis Dean looked good during his stay of 87 and 22 in the previous game. He had an underwhelming last season, but we expect him to do a lot better this time.
Victoria’s bowling attack is well-balanced with Scott Boland available for a majority of the tournament. Boland has had an incredible start to his Test career, taking 35 wickets in his first 10 matches at an average of 20.34. Victoria will hope he carries over his momentum to the Shield season.
Seam bowling all-rounder Will Sutherland had figures of 3-66 from 19 overs in the previous game. He ended last season as Victoria’s leading wicket-taker, with 41 scalps in 10 matches at an average of 19.82. With him and Boland in form and Todd Murphy being a reliable spinner, the team’s bowling unit looks quite stable.

The pitch at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay will allow for good stroke play, and batters will have a great time on this surface. Seamers won’t get much lateral movement here, but they should generate good bounce, which might trouble batters who are new to the crease. Once batters get their eye in, they can make a huge score at this venue.
The weather in Mackay will be mostly sunny and nice all through the four days of the match.
The last match played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena was the 2nd unofficial Test between Australia A and New Zealand A in September 2023. It was a low-scoring match where Australia A was set a target of 302 to win but were bowled out for 233. The team batting first in this match will look to set at least 350 on the board.
With the weather being nice and sunny, and conditions likely to be great for batting, the team winning the toss should look to bat first.
In the past five encounters between Victoria and Queensland, Victoria emerged victorious in two, Queensland in one, and the remaining two ended in draws. Both teams have assembled well-balanced units this season. Having said that, Victoria, on paper, looks like the much stronger unit between the two. Queensland’s bowling doesn’t look that threatening, and that might cost them on a wicket that’s flat, which might be the case here. We think Victoria will make a strong comeback and dominate this contest.
Back Victoria as the winners of this clash.
