New Zealand Women’s tour to South Africa didn’t exactly start on the best of notes. They lost the ODI series 1-2, but their victory in the final ODI at Durban would have given them a lot of confidence for the T20I series ahead. The five-match series begins on October 6 at Buffalo Park. New Zealand Women have had a great record over South Africa Women in T20Is and will start the series as favorites.
Barring that slip in the third ODI, South Africa Women dominated the three-match ODI series against New Zealand Women. Captain Laura Wolvaard led from the front with 198 runs in 3 matches at an average of 99 and a strike rate of 73.33. Wolvaard has played 14 T20Is on South African soil, collecting 361 runs in them with three fifties. She will clearly be the batter to watch out for in the series.
Then there’s the experienced Marizanne Kapp, who smashed 144 runs in the ODI series at an average of 72. The all-rounder’s role will be key in the middle order. She is also quite effective with her seam bowling and is likely to take a few important scalps in the powerplay overs.
Also, keep an eye out for opener Tazmin Brits. She has collected 336 runs in her last 10 matches at an average of 37.33. Brits strikes at over 103 in South Africa in T20Is and we are expecting a solid start from her in the first match.
South Africa have a more than decent bowling unit too. Masabata Klaas was their most successful bowler in the ODI series against New Zealand, nabbing 6 wickets at an average of 26.16.
Nonkululeko Mlaba’s slow left-arm spin will also trouble the Kiwi batters. She has been in pretty good form of late, taking 11 wickets in her last 10 matches at economy of 6.39.

New Zealand Women would be disappointed with their overall performance in the ODI series. However, Amelia Kerr’s brilliant unbeaten hundred in the final ODI ensured that they weren’t whitewashed, and now the White Ferns will start the T20I series with renewed vigor.
Amelia Kerr will obviously be the team’s main batter to watch out for. She looked in great touch in the ODI series, with one hundred and one fifty, and has gotten used to the conditions.
Suzie Bates may not have set the stage on fire in the ODI series, but she is one of the most experienced batters in the team and averages 57.44 in the format against South Africa. So, it would be wise to back her to get some valuable runs in this series.
Brooke Halliday had a good outing in the ODI series, collecting 114 runs at an average of 57. She might hold the key for visitors in the middle order.
New Zealand’s bowling will be led once again by Lea Tahuhu. The right-arm medium pacer has picked up 20 wickets in her last 9 matches at a strike rate of 9.9. These wickets suit her style of bowling, and she should be able to extract enough purchase from them to trouble the batters.
They can also depend on Hannah Rowe and all-rounder Sophie Devine to deliver some crucial overs.

The pitch at Buffalo Park is a typical South African surface with something in it for the seam bowlers and batters alike. Fast bowlers, particularly, have a great time at this venue. They will enjoy the consistent bounce and movement they will get from the surface. Run-making won’t be easy, and the batters who get in will have to do the bulk of the scoring.
The weather in East London will be cloudy and humid, with a few spurts of rain.
The average score batting first at Buffalo Park in women’s T20Is is just 128. The highest total posted here is 167-2 by India Women against West Indies Women in January 2023. In the seven matches played here, a total above 160 has been posted only once. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 140-150 runs.
Four out of the seven women’s T20Is played at Buffalo Park have been won by the team batting second. Furthermore, with rain on the radar in East London during the match day, the team winning the toss is expected to field first.
In T20Is, New Zealand Women have dominated South Africa Women, winning 10 of 13 games. However, South Africa will certainly have the edge in this match as they are playing at home. Moreover, they will also have the confidence of having beaten the Kiwis in the ODI series just a few days back. New Zealand Women are slowly getting into the groove after losing the first two matches on the tour. We reckon they will put up a much stronger performance in the T20I series. This will be a closely-contested match, but New Zealand might just trump the home side.
We are backing New Zealand Women as the winners of this clash.
