Sri Lanka and West Indies meet for what will be the first of three T20Is at Dambulla. Sri Lanka have had a dreadful time in this format in the past few months, winning just 3 out of 10 matches.
They had won 4 out of their 5 games before that. West Indies, on the other hand, have played some exciting T20I cricket. They’ve been far more successful this year than in the past, winning 12 out of the 16 games they’ve been involved in.
But with a few key players like Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell opting to sit out of this series, they don’t look as strong anymore.
Sri Lanka dominated West Indies until 2015, but the departure of a few key men from the camp like Sangakkara, Jayawardene etc tilted the balance in favour of the men in Maroon, who have bossed the Lankans since 2015 with 6 wins and 2 losses.

Sri Lanka, following a dismal end to their world cup campaign in West Indies, are rebuilding for the future.
Having gone down to India 0-3 at home in July, they’re now facing the prospect of challenging a team like West Indies at home with a fairly strong squad with the right mix of youth and experience. Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera have made their spots in the top order their own.
Kamindu Mendis, thanks to his exploits in the test arena, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, the hard-hitting southpaw, bolster the middle order of a squad that also includes players who like to score them fast namely Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal.
The pace bowling stocks look alright with the two Fernandos in there (Asitha and Binura), and the two slingers Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara who have modelled their action on the legend Lasith Malinga.
The SL spin attack is as strong as ever, with Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay each bringing something unique to the table.
Dashun Shanaka has been overlooked after a long run, and taking his place in the side is the young and exciting Chamindu Wickramasinghe, who’ll be looking to prove himself with both bat and ball.

West Indies have had a phenomenal run in T20Is this year, winning more than 80% of the encounters they’ve partaken in.
Although there will be some key names missing for the Windies, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russel, Shimron Hetmyer, the men in Maroon have enough reinforcements heading into this series.
Rovman Powell is back at the helm, and he’ll have plenty of all-rounders to go to if he needs to prise out a wicket quickly or stem the flow of runs, or throw caution to the wind and up the ante.
Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford have demonstrated how valuable they’re with their batting and bowling skills. And Fabian Allen, the right arm spinner who can belt out boundaries at will down the order, is also added into the mix.
The bowling attack looks thin on experience, with only Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie proper bowling options with more than 15 appearances for the national side.
Players like Pooran, Russell are hard to replace but West Indies have got a good mix of power and experience that they can put out a strong XI that can outmuscle the hosts in their own backyard.

Dambulla is a strip for the batters. The average run-rate this year is 8.85 and the lowest score by a team batting first is 160. More than 200 runs has been breached twice in the last three, with the average powerplay score around 55. Bowlers’ odds of striking could go up with the batsmen playing freely looking to maximize scoring opportunities early on. Swing and seam bowlers could make breakthroughs with the new ball when operating on the right line and length. The weather in Dambulla seems to be alright at the moment, but it’s Sri Lanka and the conditions might quickly deteriorate here.

The Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla will be hosting this contest. Sri Lanka has played 3 T20Is at this stadium and won two of them. Afghanistan posted 209/5 the highest first innings score here earlier this year and Sri Lanka nearly completed a successful chase but fell short in the end by 3 runs to finish with 206/6- which is still the best effort by a chasing side.
Playing at a venue where teams batting first have won all the three matches, it's quite simple to work out what to do. Win toss, elect to bat first and make first use of the conditions, and post a big score. This blueprint has brought success here, so we reckon that the toss winning captain would opt to bat first.
Sri Lanka are not the dominant force that they used to be at home. But they’ve some really good core group of players that can put this West Indies side under the pump. Sri Lanka have most bases covered and we’re tipping them to win.
We are backing Sri Lanka as winners of this contest.
