The T20 World Cup 2024 heats up with its 50th match as West Indies and South Africa clash on Monday at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. South Africa rides a hot streak, winning six straight tournament games. West Indies bounced back with a win over USA after losing their Super 8 opener to England. This match holds immense importance for the Windies, who need a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Even if England defeats the USA, West Indies hold their fate in their own hands. A win against South Africa guarantees their progression, thanks to their superior net run rate compared to the South Africans.

After losing their first Super 8 clash to England, things had become a little dicey for West Indies. They needed to win their next match against United States with a big margin and that’s exactly what they did. West Indies crushed their fellow co-hosts in Bridgetown on Friday night. Their bowlers shone with a fantastic performance by restricting USA to 128, and Shai Hope then smashed an unbeaten 82 off just 39 balls to clinch a win with 9 wickets and 55 balls to spare. This dominant win puts them in a strong position to reach the semi-finals.
With Shai Hope in form, this West Indian batting unit looks even more dangerous. Captain Nicholas Pooran is currently the tournament’s leading run-getter, with 227 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 148.
Rovman Powell and Andre Russell have had little to do thus far in the tournament, but both of them can smash the ball out of the park, and we expect one of them to play a blinder in this game.
Russell has been really good with his seam bowling, though, and has already picked up 9 wickets at an economy of 9.54. Alzarri Joseph tops their bowling charts, with 11 scalps at an economy of 6.41.
West Indies will also be banking on their spinners to well against South Africa’s batters, who traditionally struggle against quality spin bowling. Hot off his Player of the Match performance against USA with 3 wickets for just 19 runs, Roston Chase will be a major force to be reckoned with. Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie will aim to restrict the flow of runs.

A fiery knock of 65 from Quinton de Kock (off 38 balls) stood out as South Africa edged past England by seven runs in a low-scoring contest at Kensington Oval, Barbados on Friday. South Africa's bowlers were disciplined, especially during the powerplay and death overs, to secure a hard-fought win. South Africa have now won two games in a row in the Super 8 and have one foot in the Powerplay.
De Kock has been the man in form for the Proteas and has started the Super 8’s with two consecutive fifties. The left-handed opener has understood the pace of these wickets and is giving the team aggressive starts, striking it at 147 in the tournament.
Apart from him, the other batter to have stood out is David Miller, who has collected 144 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 107.
The South African batting isn’t without issues, though. Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs haven’t really made an contributions so far and have looked out of touch.
Heinrich Klaasen has looked good in patches, but we reckon this is the game he will go big.
South Africa’s bowlers have done a wonderful job so far. Anrich Nortje is leading the charge for the Proteas. He's tied for second place with most wickets in the tournament, taking 11 wickets in just 6 innings an economy of 5.91. Kagiso Rabada has been a bit expensive at times, but he's come up big when it mattered most, delivering crucial overs in the matches against England and USA.
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has been a steady contributor as well, picking up 8 wickets and keeping the runs tight with an economy rate of 6.10.

The pitch at North Sound is ideal for T20 cricket. The ball comes on nicely to the bat for the most part and seamers will need to vary their pace and bowl cutters to keep the batters guessing. Spinners will have a crucial role to play as the pitch has some bounce and turn to offer. Batters, though, should have a nice time here.
Rain and a thunderstorm are expected in Antigua on the morning of the game. However, the weather for the evening is clear, and we should get a full game.

The average first innings score at North Sound is 132. However, the wicket has behaved pretty well, with the highest total at the venue in this competition being South Africa’s 194-4 against USA. This is unlikely to be a low-scoring game given the big-hitters on both sides. The team batting first will be looking to post a total of around 170-180 runs to stay in the game.
So far in the T20 World Cup at North Sound, both teams batting first and chasing have won three games each. While South Africa have been great at defending their low totals in this World Cup, West Indies have excelled at chasing. With the Net Run Rate (NRR) crucial for reaching the semis, West Indies will likely choose to chase to control the number of overs needed for victory and potentially overtake England in the standings.
West Indies have won four of their last five T20Is against South Africa. The Proteas have are coming into this game on the back of s terrific winning streak. Their bowlers are in red-hot form and will certainly challenge the West Indian batters. However, West Indies are playing at home and know this is a virtual knock out game for them. A win here will take them to the semis, so we expect them to come out all guns blazing. On current form, you would say South Africa has the upper hand in this match, but we reckon West Indies, with their home advantage, and their big-hitters, will take the bull by the horns and win this game.
We are backing West Indies to win this game.
