Sri Lanka women take on UAE women in the second semi-final of the T20 world cup qualifier in UAE. An undefeated run in the group stages pushed Sri Lanka women to the top of the tree in Group A, while UAE women made it to the semi-finals by the barest of margins, thanks to their slender NRR advantage over Netherlands who also won two and lost two matches.
Sri Lankan women team were clearly the best of all teams from both groups, with 4 wins from 4 matches and a staggering NRR of 2.778, which is only fractionally more than Ireland women who also notched up four victories in as many matches. They’ll come into this match with their confidence sky-high, and will be hoping to reach the finals with five victories on the trot.
UAE women have a huge task in front of them, but they’ll be looking to put their best foot forward in tackling the SL juggernaut.

After their defeat in the Benoni T20, where they crumbled while chasing and took a whopping 79 run loss, Sri Lanka women haven’t looked back once.
They came back from that massive defeat with two back to back wins to win the T20 series in South Africa. And here they are at the World Cup qualifier tournament, one step away from a final. They carried their confidence and form from that South African series into this tournament, winning four games on the bounce. 3 of those victories were comprehensive: a 67-run win over Thailand women, a 10-wicket victory against Scotland women, and another 67-run win over team Uganda.
Team USA ran them close at the tolerance oval, and restricted Sri Lanka to a gettable score, but credit to the Asian side for making a fist of it. They bowled with discipline and executed their plans to keep USA down to 105, and picked up a crucial 18-run victory in the end. Although UAE women isn’t a real threat, Sri Lanka women will not take them lightly especially given what’s on stake: an opportunity to play the finals of the qualifier.
Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu have been dominant with the bat, each scoring 135 runs and 103 runs of the 4 games in the competition so far. Kavisha Dilhari and Inoshi Priyadarshani, with 7 wickets and 6 wickets respectively, have been the stars with the ball in hand.

UAE women have been lucky to get to where they are. A slender lead in NRR over their Netherland counterparts has given them an opportunity to face a mighty opponent like Sri Lanka in a crucial semi-final of a world event in front of their fans. They’ll not want to make a meal of this.
They started the tournament off in a poor fashion, dropping their first two games against Ireland Women and Zimbabwe Women. But a drubbing of Netherlands gave them the confidence to defeat Vanuatu again by a significant margin, and those two wins undid the early damage they suffered against Irish and Zimbabwean women. Samaira Dharnidharka has been outstanding with the ball, picking up 7 scalps from 4 games.
Esha Oza, the captain of the team, has contributed with bat and ball at some important junctures, too. Theertha Satish, Esha’s opening partner, has been consistent and effective at the top of the order, scoring 106 runs off 4 games. Heena Hotchandani, with 61 runs from 4 games, has made useful contribution to the team’s batting cause at a few instances as well.
All these players will need to stand up and play a huge role if they need to overcome the SL challenge facing them in the semi-finals.

Most of the matches at this venue have been one-sided, with teams bowling out the opposition after getting up to a huge score, or skittling out the opposition for a low score and chasing down the target comfortably. The decks here have been great to bowl on in a few matches and ideal for run-scoring on the rest. The forecast for the game is good, and if it holds good, there should be no interruption due to weather.

The match will be played at the Sheikh Zayed cricket stadium in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka have won both the matches they played here so far in the tournament, while UAE, the home team, have managed one victory and one defeat from its two fixtures here.
Teams batting first have managed to win on only four occasions, with chasing teams enjoying more success here at this venue. It’s a clear indication that teams are more likely to opt to chase here.
Our prediction is for Sri Lanka women to dictate and come away with a win.
We are backing Sri Lanka women as winners of this contest.
