The Vitality T20 Blast South Group intensifies as Somerset (3rd on the points table at the time of writing) clashes with Gloucestershire (5th on the points table) in a pivotal encounter.
Both sides are not too far away from each other on the table with Somerset’s five wins earning them 11 points and Gloucestershire’s four wins and a tie giving them 9 points so far holds a slender advantage due to a higher win percentage.
The West Country derby promises an enthralling display of power-hitting and strategic bowling, with significant playoff implications. Somerset holds the edge in recent encounters, winning 4 out of the last 5 encounters against Gloucestershire.
However, Gloucestershire's convincing victory over Somerset just a couple of weeks ago clearly demonstrates their ability to challenge the table-toppers on their day.

A formidable top order adds a totally different dimension to Somerset's batting. Will Smeed, the current leading run scorer, is in blistering form, providing explosive starts. Tom Banton and Tom Abell have been excellent with their ing act and so has been Tom Kohler Core at different times in the competition.
Alongside Will Smeed, these three have formed a dangerous trio capable of taking the attack to the opposition and dismantling any bowling unit. Occasional middle-order batting collapses and fielding lapses have hampered Somerset in the past. While the top order is in fine form with the bat in hand, the middle order's vulnerability could cost Somerset especially if the top order batsmen are sent back cheaply. The bowling attack is spearheaded by Ben Green, a pacer who thrives in the death overs.
Those wickets have come at a cost though, with Green’s overs costing above 10 runs on an average. But Riley Meredith with his accuracy and ability to swing the new ball at a good clip has been exceptional. Jack Leach and Roelof Van Der Merwe, the left arm twirlers, have done well to put a lid on batsmen scoring freely through the middle. But they have not produced wickets at will, though.
Tom Banton (wk), Will Smeed, Tom Kohler-Core, Tom Abell, Sean Dickson, Lewis Gregory (c), Ben Green, Roelof van der Merwe, Josh Davey, Jack Leach, Riley Meredith.

Gloucestershire’s batting revolves around the solidity of Miles Hammond at the top of the order. Hammond has been consistent in his run scoring, no matter the situation.
He hasalways looked to anchor the innings and team up with the likes of Cameron Bancroft, James Bracey, and Jack Taylor to put a challenging total on board. Ben Charlesworth and Oliver Price combined for a quickfire 82 run partnership of just 32 balls to change the course of the match.
However, Gloucestershire's batting beyond the top 3 can be inconsistent at times, and the absence of a genuine middle order batsman might be exposed against Somerset's bowling lineup.
They boast a potent bowling attack, marshalled by Matt Taylor's wicket-taking prowess. David Payne's experience and control in the middle overs has been remarkable as well. Marchant de Lange and Josh Shaw haven’t quite hit their stride yet and are long way off their best in of picking wickets but they’re still contributing by keeping the opposition batsmen from scoring freely at a faster clip.
Beau Webster has not created much impact with the ball, picking up just 3 wickets from 8 games so far.

The decks here at Somerset have a bit of a reputation as a hunting ground for batsman. The short boundaries on offer her will give strokemakers like Hammond free license to go hard. Historical data suggests an average first-innings score exceeding 185 runs should be par. The weather forecast for the match is fine, with a very low chance of shower.
