Somerset will be facing up to Hampshire in a key battle that will make or break their progress in the tournament. They got off to a winning start against Essex, but their campaign has gone astray a bit with two successive defeats against Kent and Surrey.
Hampshire, on the hand, put a 5-wicket loss to Surrey quickly behind them and gone on to win two matches against Kent and Gloucestershire. Returning to base will give Somerset a huge boost in confidence, as they enjoy a slight edge over Hampshire particularly in the recent five encounters at this venue in Taunton.
Certain things about the head to head numbers are interesting too. Somerset are way ahead on the overall head to head, with 16 wins to Hampshire’s 10. However, Hampshire have a bit of an edge over Somerset, with 3 wins and 2 losses in the most recent encounters.

Defending champions Somerset have had a shocker of a start to their title defence, losing two in three games. They kicked off their campaign with a win against Essex over at Taunton, with captain Lewis Gregory chipping in with both bat and ball to take the player of the match honours.
A new set of players, namely Riley Meredith and Ben Green, delivered a fine bowling performance to make sure Surrey didn’t get any more than 163. But nothing came of that bowling brilliance, as Somerset batting group botched up the chase.
Except Will Smeed and Tom Kohler Core, who scored rapidly, the rest of the batsmen found it difficult to score runs and Somerset were bowled out for 106 runs inside 16 overs. Coming up against Kent spitfires, the opening trio Tom Banton, Will Smeed and Kohler Core made up for the poor show in the previous outing and gave Somerset a great launchpad, but the lower order couldn’t quite carry on with scoring at the same tempo and finished just three shy of 200.
However, Somerset bowlers made 198 look even more competitive for Kent batsmen, removing four of them in no time. Jake Ball, in particular, was excellent picking up a couple of wickets for just 14 runs from his three overs. But they couldn’t quite get rid of Kent captain Sam Billings who went on to make a hundred, and it proved to be the difference in the end.

Hampshire went down to Surrey at Southampton in their season opener. However, they’ve wasted no time in getting back on track, picking up back to back wins over Kent and Gloucestershire. As a result, they are comfortably placed on the third position and level on points with Kent. However, there are a few things they need to improve on quickly if they want to go deep in the tournament. The top order hasn’t been able to score with consistency, leaving the middle order with the task to score the bulk of the runs.
Lack of runs from the bat of Ben McDermott, Nick Gubbins, and captain James Vince Luckily has hampered Hampshire’s ability to score freely and without pressure in the powerplay but the middle order has stood up and played with responsibility. Joe Weatherly and Toby Albert have done particularly well along with all-rounder James Fuller has made handy contribution with the bat and ball in hand. Bowling has clearly been Hampshire’s saviour, especially with the variety they have in their attack.
James Fuller, John Turner and Chris Wood have been Hampshire’s leading wicket takers- with 14 wickets between them. Michael Neser and Liam Dawson haven’t quite been at their best yet, but they’ll be hoping to turn things around as the tournament progresses.

The surfaces here have been friendly to batters, but bowlers do get value for maintaining their lines and lengths here. No problems with the weather forecast, as the conditions are expected to be mostly sunny with a bit of a breeze around. f

The match is set to take place at the Cooper Associates County Cricket Ground in Taunton- which is Somerset’s home venue. After a couple of defeats, Somerset will be happy about coming back to home where they enjoy a fair bit of success: 7o wins and 44 defeats from 126 games.
This has been a great venue for teams that fancy chasing totals. We guess both captains will be happy to put the opposition in to have a bat first considering all of their wins coming while chasing.
Somerset will be itching to get back to winning ways on their return home. They’ve not quite come into their own but they’ll looking to dominate Hampshire with both bat and ball on their home turf.
We are backing Somerset to win this match.
