A thrilling victory against Victoria gave Tasmania their fifth win of the season, taking them one step towards the final. A win over South Australia in Hobart next week will not only help Tasmanians cement their place in the final, but also grant them the hosting rights for this month’s decider. And they’d want to seize this opportunity.
Tasmania's most recent final appearance in 2017-18, over at Allan Border Field Brisbane, ended in a resounding 9-wicket defeat to table-toppers Queensland. However, they’ll seek inspiration from their 2013 home final performance at Hobart in which they held off Queensland for a determined draw to take their third Sheffield Shield title.
In the final round of Sheffield Shield this season, they take on South Australia--already out of contention—who will be playing for pride and a chance to blood some new players waiting in the wings. From a SA perspective, a win against potential champs Tasmania would be the perfect way to sign off from this season.

A brilliant all-round performance from Beau Webster helped Tasmania claim a 57-run victory over Victoria in Hobart.
A second innings batting failure would have cost them the match but Tasmania’s leading run scorer stepped up to the plate and scored 167 to guide his team through to safety. He had a rough outing in the first innings but made a decisive contribution to their team total in the second inning by stitching up a brilliant tenth wicket partnership with Riley Meredith to take his team from a dismal 154/9 to a match-winning 307. Webster’s marathon innings proved to be the difference in the end, with him waging a lone battle against an inspired Victorian attack.
Defending 442, the Tasmanian bowlers were made to slog by Victorian openers. 178 runs were shaved off from the target before the first wicket fell, and the batsmen to come kept the chase going on without losing wickets in clumps. But Gabe Bell (39 wickets from 7 matches) and Iain Carlisle (8 from 2 games) kept the pressure on and chipped away at the wickets to rout Victorians for 384.

Despite a decent beginning to the season with two wins and two losses, South Australia's fortunes took a downturn as they came rolling down a slippery slope, losing their next four matches. With 6 losses so far- the most by any team this season- they are no longer in contention for the finals.
While their batting has been a major disappointment, Nathan McSweeny and Ben Manenti have stood out as reliable performers, maintaining averages above 35 and serving as the mainstays of an otherwise inconsistent batting line-up. Similarly, Nathan McAndrew has been remarkable with the ball in hand, having taken 40 wickets from just 8 matches. He has not had much from other bowlers in the ranks, and that has hampered their ability to put pressure on the opposition.
This has largely been a season to forget for South Australia, but they’ll be hoping to put in a decent performance against ladder-leaders Tasmania and end the season on a high note. To challenge an in-form team like Tasmania, South Australia needs to play as a team and show good game awareness to either stay in front or quickly recover from a setback.

The forecast suggests that the conditions could be cloudy and a bit warm on the first day. It may not be as cloudy the following days, but temperatures are expected to drop to around 20 degrees. The strip may not disintegrate much over the four days, but bowlers could get some purchase from the sticky wicket and with favourable overhead conditions.

Average TurnThis match will be played at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart. The home team has yet to concede a match here, winning 3 and drawing one.
Each team that won toss here at Hobart decided to field first, so it’s no surprise what the team winning the toss is likely to do in this match.
Given their batting woes and bowlinig inconsitencies, the best result Southern Australia could get out of this match would be a draw. On the other hand, Tasmania, given their current form, will push for a win. Tasmania to win, hands down.
We are backing Tasmania as winners of this contest.
