Afghanistan outplayed UAE in all three departments of the game in the series opener, winning the first match by 131 runs. But UAE wouldn’t go down without a fight and staged a quick recovery to complete an excellent comeback win in the second match. At 1-1, the series is now delicately poised, and things are not much different to when these two teams met last time.
In the series early last year, Afghanistan drew first blood, but team UAE took the second match sending the series into a decider. They stuttered in the last match and botched up a genuine chance to win their first ever T20I series against Afghanistan, but they’ll be hoping to make amends this time. Men from Afghanistan will be wary of the hosts and hoping to clinch the series before they set off to India for a T20 series in a few weeks.

With the series at 1-1, UAE will head into the decider hoping to put in another strong performance that gives them the best chance of securing their first series against Afghanistan in the shortest format of the game.
They couldn’t quite do it when the series was level last time, but will turn to captain Muhammad Waseem and stand-in opener Aryan Lakra to get them off to a solid start. Not losing a wicket until the 9th over allowed UAE to play a little freely and go searching for boundaries.
They weren’t picking up boundaries at will, a skill which they’ll need to hone if they want to challenge even much stronger opposition than Afghanistan, but kept accumulating runs to get to a decent total. With the ball, the UAE bowlers had another shaky start and the Afghanistan openers cashed in scoring 47 runs in the sixth over.
But Muhammad Jawadullah and Ali Naseer tidied things up and kept taking wickets at regular intervals, killing any life left out of the visitors’ chase. Mohammad Nabi’s whirlwind knock in the fag end of the innings gave them some jitters, but they held their nerves well. They’ll be hoping to put-in another strong all-round performance as a team and pull off that elusive series-win.

Afghan bowlers let the UAE openers score some crucial powerplay runs but kept chipping away with the wickets and made sure the UAE middle order didn’t capitalize on the good start their openers got them. After keeping UAE to a respectable 166/7 in 20 overs, they would have hoped they can go out there and chase this total down to complete two wins back-to-back and win the series.
And, their opening batsmen got them off to a flier, with Hazratullah Zazai in particular going after the UAE bowlers. After wiping nearly 50 runs off the target before the completion of powerplay, they were looking to kick into a higher gear and run away with it. But their batting order found two UAE bowlers hard to manage, losing 6 wickets with just 52 added to the total.
With just 6 more overs to go and 4 wickets in hand, Afghanistan needed 70 odd runs with Mohammad Nabi the only recognized batter who can score runs at will. They lost another couple of wickets and their chase stalled before the former captain of Afghanistan added some excitement with some lusty blows in the penultimate over and a lone six in the last over before losing his wicket.

The weather gods have been kind in the two matches completed so far, and the forecast for the third match suggests the trend will continue. The weather forecast is encouraging, and the pitch should be good to bat upon, so there are some runs to be had.

High TurnSharjah Cricket Stadium will host the final T20I match of the series.
With the team batting first winning the match on both occasions, it is not hard to imagine what Muhammad Waseem or Ibhrahim Zadran would decide to do if the toss coin went in their favor.
Runs on the board in a decider always puts the chasing team under extra pressure, so expect the team winning the toss to bat first.
UAE's series-levelling effort in the second match made sure the series went to a decider. In doing so, they showed they can trouble a higher-ranked team on their day. After a galloping win in the first, Afghanistan has had a bit of a stutter, but they will be looking to put together another complete performance to deny UAE a series-win.
