Victoria have been one of the most successful franchises in recent times in Sheffield Shield. They won three consecutive titles from 2014 to 2017 and another one in 2018-19. Victoria started this season with a solid batting performance against Tasmania, but the bowling effort could have been better.
In the first game, batting first after losing the toss, Victoria lost two quick wickets for just 22 runs on board. Captain Peter Handscomb then ed Marcus Harris to form a big partnership of 239 runs. Both scored centuries - Marcus Harris (143 runs) and Peter Handscomb (129 runs). A good effort down the order from Mitchell Perry and Fergus O'Neill helped them declare at 428 for 9 wickets.
Victorian bowlers could not make early inroads in Tasmania’s first innings. Tasmania eventually scored 527 for 9 in their first innings, thanks to century efforts from Beau Webster and Bradley Hope. Mitchell Perry was the top bowler for Victoria with 3 wickets, followed by 2 wickets each for Fergus O'Neill, Todd Murphy, and Sam Elliott. Tasmania did not bat again, and the match ended in a tame draw. While Victoria did well with the bat, the inability to pick early wickets might prove to be an issue against a strong batting lineup of New South Wales.

Despite winning just one title in the last ten years, New South Wales remains the top franchise in the Sheffield Shield tournament. Overall, New South Wales have won 47 Sheffield Shield titles, the last of which came as recently as the 2019-20 season. Although the opening game of this season ended in a draw, New South Wales dominated it against South Australia.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, New South Wales put up 366 in the first innings thanks to a patient century from the opener Sam Konstas. He scored 152 runs and was the 6th wicket to fall for New South Wales. Wicketkeeper Josh Philippe’s 56 was another notable innings.
Under the leadership of veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon, the bowlers did a great job restricting South Australia to 260 runs in their first innings. Nathan Lyon took 5 for 47 in the 25-over spell. Tanveer Sangha ed Lyon well with 2 wickets for 97 runs.
Sam Konstas shined again in the second innings with yet another century (105 runs) and helped New South Wales score 282 runs in quick time, setting a target of 389 for South Australia with over 100 overs to go. New South Wales had the opposition 4 for 23 and looked set to win the game, but defiant centuries from Nathan McSweeney and Alex Carey meant the match ended in a draw. Can New South Wales go one step further to secure the first win of the season against Victoria?

The weather on the match day at the MCG is expected to be partly cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 18°C and 11°C. With a very little chance of rain and mild winds the overall conditions are suitable for a game of cricket.
The venue of the match is Melbourne Cricket Ground. It is one of the biggest cricket stadiums in the world. This is the most premier cricket venue in Australia and has hosted numerous Tests, ODIs and T20I matches. Seating capacity is no concern here as the stadium can accommodate about 100,000 spectators.
The large ground size, traditional pitches, and variable weather conditions at the MCG make the toss decision tricky. Out of the 116 Tests played here, 99 have ended in an outright result with 52 of them winning by the teams batting first. The team winning the toss should bat first here.
New South Wales had the first game in the grasp but they could not finish it off. They had superior batting and bowling performances in the first game. Victoria did score a lot of runs, but the bowling lacked in comparison. The presence of Lyon and Sangha makes it a very potent bowling unit for New South Wales. We believe with a stronger bowling unit New South Wales have a better chance to defeat Victoria in this game at MCG.
We predict that New South Wales will defeat Victoria.
