Toss Prediction: | To Bowl |
Weather: | 16.0°C|Sunny |
The CSA T20 competition is back with another season of high octane cricket. And this contest in particular is between two teams who always like to go hard at their opposition.
The Warriors, despite two consecutive defeats against the Dolphins in the previous tournament, are still a pretty good side in the domestic circuit. Their batting group benefits from the experience of senior players like Khaya Zondo and the promise of youngsters like Jordan Hermann, Andile Mogakane, and Jiveshan Pillay, making it one of the exciting combinations among all squads. Their bowling attack, led by Siya Simetu and Beyers Swanepoel, is also expected to be a key factor in their success.
Dolphins, the runners-up last year, have had good prep coming into this tournament, with several warm-up games and an internal T20 competition. Their squad of players, which looks potent with good balance between youth and experience, is quite optimistic that it will stand them in good stead coming into this high-octane tournament.

Two defeats in two encounters against Dolphins ended Warriors hopes of staking claim to the CSA T20 challenge trophy. Dolphins chased down the total quite comfortably first up in Gqeberha and later in Durban, much to the dismay of Warriors.
Nevertheless, it’s a new tournament and Warriors will be seeking a fresh beginning. But they may have to do without the services of their captain Matthew Breetzke and fast bowler Patrick Kruger who’re away on national duty for the Proteas. The enterprising batsman is carving a spot for himself in the national side, and he’s going to be unavailable for a few matches. His boots are too big to fill but Dolphins will really do well to find a replacement that’s at least half as good as the flashing right hander up top.
Patrick Kruger, with his ability to contribute consistently with both bat and ball, is another costly miss. However, there’s no dearth of talent, with the likes of Jordan Hermann, Andile Mogakane, and Jiveshan Pillay itching to showcase their skill and experience at this level. Siya Simetu’s left arm orthodox was too good for most of the batsmen that faced him in the previous edition, and he’d be looking to better his effort of 21 wickets. Beyers Swanepoel, who made a mark with his impressive pace, will look to spearhead the attack and have an impact with several big players unavailable.

Dolphins has assembled an interesting squad for the first match consisting of a good mix of young and experienced players. Having come so close to clinching the title last season, the Dolphins players would be looking to go one better this time around.
Youngsters like Romashan Pillay, Slade van Staden, Nqobani Mokoena and Banele Cele will get a chance to feature in the XI and put their skill on display, especially with several Proteas players away on a tour in the UAE. The core of the team hasn’t changed with the experienced offie Prenelan Subrayen all set to captain the side for another season, and other experienced campaigners in Zondo and JJ Smuts featuring in the batting group.
A sedate start last season didn’t allow them to take the foot off the gas, and they had to put together match-winning performances one after another to ensure they stayed in the top four right till the end.
But the Dolphins are aiming at geting off to a great start and building some momentum into their campaign right from the outset.

Runs are often hard to come by on the wickets here, but batsmen who apply themselves to the job at hand and play with intent can find scoring opportunities. Bowlers, who take the pace off and deceive batsmen with a bag of tricks, have a good chance of doing well here. Any score above 150 to 160 gives you a good shot at defending well. The weather forecast for the match is fine so the odds for a rain threatening to ruin the match are quite low.
St. George’s Park in Gqeberha is the venue for this match. Dolphins restricted Warriors to a below par total and romped home in style the last time they met each other here.
Teams batting first did way better than chasing teams last season, winning five of the eight matches here. No surprises if the captain winning the toss decides to have a bat first.
Warriors are a bit hamstrung with few of their marquee players away on international duty and that gives Dolphins a bit of an edge. Dolphins, to win.
We are backing Dolphins as winners of this contest.
