Wellington Firebirds will be back to the Basin Reserve for their last league stage match. They are placed second in the points table with 22 points and a win here will take them to 26 and seal their spot in the top 2.

Canterbury Kings, who’ve lost just one of their last 3 matches also need a win here to step up to number 2 or at least stay alive in the race to the finals. With a lot at stake here, the two teams will need to bring their A-game, especially the home side.

Firebirds have seen a decline in their batting performances since their last win over Canterbury in the away game. They successfully defended 184 runs in Christchurch. But since then they’ve scored 148 for 8 and 102 all out while batting first.

Canterbury Kings, on the other hand, managed to score 200+ in two of their last 3 innings the exception being the game against Wellington where they lost by 21 runs.

Chad Bowes, Tom Latham, and Henry Nicholls in the top 3 of the Kings lineup look very promising and will be the key players in this game.

Wellington Firebirds Preview

Wellington Firebirds ed a big win in their first home game of the season against Otago Volts. However, since then, they’ve struggled on their home turf losing their last two consecutive matches.

In their recent match against Northern Knights, the Nick Kelly-led Firebirds were bowled out for 102 runs after being put to bat first. Rachin Ravindra is back in the side and he opened in the last innings replacing Nathan Smith at the top but failed to make an impact.

None of the top 5 batsmen in the Wellington lineup scored in double digits. Nathan Smith topped the batting charts with 26 off 21 balls at number 8. Wellington Firebirds desperately need a comeback from their top order.

Rachin Ravindra will be the key player to make this happen. Skipper Nick Kelly and Mohammad Abbas also need to step up and deliver at 3 and 4. This is their last game of the season and the only shot at finishing in the top 3 and securing a place in the Elimination Final.

In the bowling attack, Nathan Smith has looked in good touch and will be one to watch out for. Logan van Beek and Peter Younghusband are others who can find breakthroughs in this bowling department.

Wellington Firebirds Predicted Playing XI:

Rachin Ravindra, Nick Greenwood, Nick Kelly (c), Muhammad Abbas, Michael Bracewell, Jesse Tashkoff, Callum McLachlan (wk), Nathan Smith, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband, Ian Meake

Canterbury Kings Preview

Canterbury Kings will be looking to settle scores with the Firebirds as they face off in a must-win game in Wellington. They should be confident coming into this match given their recent win over Northern Knights and the poor run of form of key batters in the Wellington lineup.

Zakary Foulkes and William ORourke will be the key wicket-takers for Canterbury Kings. Angus McKenzie was successful against Wellington in their last encounter and will be another key player to watch out for.

The recent form of the top 3 batters in this lineup has helped the Kings stay on top of the game. Chad Bowes, Tom Latham, and Henry Nicholls are all potential match-winners in the top 3.

While there are some promising batters in the lower middle order too, a lot depends on the start these 3 give. Cole McConchie hasn’t been in good touch recently and is struggling to score runs at number 4.

However, the likes of Bevon Jacobs and Mitchell Hay have delivered impactful knocks in recent outings and will be expected to play the finisher’s role in this lineup.

It looks like a strong overall squad with many in-form players and with the current momentum, Kings should start with an edge in this match.

Canterbury Kings Predicted Playing XI:

Chad Bowes, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Cole McConchie (c), Mitchell Hay (wk), Michael Rippon, Bevon Jacobs, Zakary Foulkes, Angus McKenzie, Michael Rae, William ORourke

Weather Conditions

It is a good batting wicket but also offers help to the bowlers. It is not a flat track where batters will go berserk and there is an even contest between the bat and the ball. The weather will be partly cloudy with a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius on the match day in Wellington.

WELL vs CANT Pitch Report

Basin Reserve in Wellington will host the Wellington Firebirds vs Canterbury Kings match of Super Smash 2023-24. It is a great venue for cricket where the average 1st innings score in domestic T20s is 160 runs. We reckon 175-190 runs 1st innings total should be a match-winning score in this match.

Toss: To Bowl

The recent games here haven’t been particularly high-scoring and teams bowling first have managed to restrict the hosts to a below-par total. We reckon the visitors will look to continue the trend while the hosts should now be wary of batting first.

Wellington Firebirds have always been impressive at their home ground. They have the record for the highest score here. However, they’ve been out of form lately and their key players aren’t firing at crucial positions in the lineup. The visitors, on the other hand, look to be in sublime form and will carry the winning momentum. Canterbury Kings will have a slight edge over the hosts and start as favorites in our match prediction.
