Worcestershire have had a remarkable run this season in the Royal London One-Day Cup. After a disappointing bottom-of-the-table finish in 2022, they have put on a much better show this time. Currently, Worcestershire are 3rd in the Group B table with 10 points and a net run rate of 0.167. They are one spot below Gloucestershire, who have the same number of points but at a better run rate. Worcestershire have now all but confirmed their playoff spot, but they have a shot at ending the group stage in the top two if they win their final league game against Sussex by a big margin. Sussex are already out of contention, with just one win from six games, and are stranded at the bottom with just 2 points.

Worcestershire have won three of their previous four games, including the most recent two. They ed a comprehensive 62-run win against Derbyshire in their last match. In a match that was reduced to 30 overs-a-side due to rain, Worcestershire blasted 254-5 after being asked to bat first at County Ground in Derby. They then bowled Derbyshire out for 192 runs. Captain Jake Libby (73 off 60 balls) and Kashif Ali (88 off 36 balls) were the standout performers with the bat, while Patrick Brown (4-51) and Josh Baker (3-29) impressed with the ball.
It was a complete performance and will give the team a lot of confidence going forward. Skipper Jake Libby has had an outstanding season, amassing 327 runs in 7 innings at an average of 65.40 and a strike rate of 96.74. He, along with Rob Jones (299 runs in 7 innings at 42.71), have been the pivot of Worcestershire's middle order this season.
Kashif Ali showed how destructive he can be lower down the order. He has scored 266 runs and has been striking it at almost 138.
Josh Baker’s spell in the previous game established his spot as Worcestershire's leading wicket taker this season. The left-arm spinner now has 12 scalps in 7 games at an economy of 5.46. Another bowler you can back is Dillon Pennington, who has taken 9 wickets in 6 innings this season at 5.67.

Sussex have had one of their most forgettable seasons in the One-Day Cup. Unless they pull off something special, it looks likely that they will end the 2023 season as the wooden spooners. The season is already over, but Sussex still have two group games remaining and would like to finish on a high.
They are coming off a massive 166-run loss to Gloucestershire at Hove. Chasing a target of 312, Sussex were shot out for just 145.
Cheteshwar Pujara, after a successful county stint, has continued his great form in the shorter format too. The gritty Indian batter is Sussex’s leading run-getter this year, scoring 361 runs in 6 innings at an incredible average of 90.25 and a strike rate of 87.62.
Skipper Tom Haines has been among the runs as well, collecting 257 of them in 6 innings at 42.83. These two batters have pretty much carried the batting unit throughout the season.
The team’s bowling has largely revolved around off-spinner Jack Carson (12 wickets in 6 innings at 6.90) and seam bowling all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice (8 wickets in 6 innings at 5.83). Prentice also has 171 runs to go with his bowling performance. Henry Crocombe, who took 4 wickets in the previous game, has had a good season too, but has been on the expensive side. In fact, Sussex’s bowling attack has been guilty of being wayward and conceding way too many runs.

The pitch at New Road is typically great for batting. The ball comes on nice and hard to the bat and there are plenty of runs for the taking in this small ground once batters have settled in. Moreover, the surface remains true throughout the day, so the chasing side too will be in with a chance. Like most venues in England, seam bowlers will get help here too, particularly at the start of the innings. However, the surface tends to be relatively flat and even-paced, allowing batters to play their shots freely and encouraging high-scoring encounters.
The weather during the game will be warm with brilliant sunshine.
Last year, in four One-Day Cup games played at New Road, totals above 300 were achieved four times, with Glamorgan recording the highest total of 356-3. This season, we have already seen a colossal 375-7 posted here by Worcestershire versus Gloucestershire. The team batting first in this game will look to set a target in the range of 330-340 runs.
Over the past two seasons, Worcester's New Road ground has hosted seven One-Day Cup games; of these, four have been won by the team batting first and three by the side chasing. This is a high-scoring venue and the team batting first will look to bat first and put on a big total.
Sussex have had a great record against Worcestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup in recent years, winning four of the last five games they have played against them. However, this year things are starkly different for both sides. Worcestershire are flying high on confidence, while Sussex are already out of contention. While Sussex's bowling unit has been letting runs slip through, their batting performance leans heavily on a few key players. Worcestershire are firing like a well-oiled machine in all departments and will be favorites to win this encounter.
