The first match of the ODI series was exciting with Zimbabwe drawing first blood. The hosts were too hot to handle for a hapless Pakistani side which missed the services of Babar Azam, Afridi etc.
Zimbabwe, from time to time, produce a brilliant all-round team effort. And they sure did so in the first match of the ODI series against Pakistan, who’re coming off a high after a splendid series victory in Australia against the world champions.
Pakistan need to win this contest to force things into the decider, but the question remains: will Zimbabwe be able to put in spirited performance one more time? They do have the players to pull things off. For sure. But do they have the temperament and mindset to dominate a team like Pakistan and win a series?

Zimbabwe are a side in transition. Three of their top 3 players who’re in their 39s and 40s have decided to stick around and their experience on to the young guns shaping up as the future of Zim cricket. But they looked like the better side and much experienced side than their counterparts in green. On an overcast day, they were inserted to bat first. Their openers took the game on, scoring 40 runs off the first 6 overs against a quality Pakistani attack.
The next few wickets fell cheaply, with not many runs added to the score. And suddenly they were left reeling at 5 for 99 in the 20th over. Sikandar Raza, arguably their best all-rounder ever, made 39 runs and strung useful partnerships with Richard Ngarava and Brian Bennett before perishing in search of some quick runs. It was fascinating to see Ngarava step up to the plate and take responsibility with the willow. He made an almost run-a-ball 48 runs off 52 balls, taking his side over 200. And it proved the difference in the end.
Defending 141 runs from 21 overs, Zim bowlers made good use of the conditions and kept probing away asking serious questions of the visitors. Blessing Muzarbani, in particular, took a brace of wickets to set the pace, post which the spinners came on and took control of the chase. Zimbabwe will hope to adopt a similar ploy in the second match and look to seal the series.

Pakistan went down fighting to Zimbabwe in the first match of the series in typical fashion, straight from the highs of clinching a series Down Under.
From securing a victory against the World Champs to being knocked down by a nation like Zimbabwe, Pakistani cricket never ceases to amaze. Granted they are missing a few key names in Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi among others. The XI looks slightly inexperienced all the way through from top to bottom, with captain Mohammad Rizwan the only experienced cricketer with more appearances. But Pakistan never wanted to take the game head-on after putting Zimbabwe in to bat first.
They let the hosts run up to beyond 200, but they made things difficult for them in the chase trying to accumulate runs at a slow pace. And when the forecast rains finally came down, they were caught napping having lost 6 wickets for 60 runs in 21 overs. That’s proper test match batting where the goal is to see off the threatening bowlers.
The way they batted the modest target was never in sight and the runs started drying up as the Zimbabwean bowlers started piling on the pressure. Pakistan batsmen would want to show better intent and want to apply themselves well to building an innings. They got bogged down and got into a shell, suffering their fifth defeat to Zimbabwe in 63 matches.

Run scoring was hard on this wicket the other day, which is not that uncommon at Bulawayo. Any score around 250 to 280 would be good to defend as long as the bowlers make sure they take full advantage of the helpful conditions. Light rains are in forecast in the afternoon but it’s going to be mostly cloudy throughout with short intervals of sunshine.
The match will be played at the Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. The hosts win over Pakistan was their first in ten matches at this venue.
Batting first proved to be a sound decision six out of ten times in the last 10 matches so we’re hoping that the toss winning captain toss would win toss and bat first if the conditions aren’t too overcast.
Zimbabwe took advantage of Pakistan’s inability to come to grips with the conditions on offer. But we reckon that Pakistan would put this upset behind and come up with a strong performance to get even.
We are backing Pakistan as winners of this contest.
