County Championship Division Two - Run Scorers

Some pundits and commentators would have you know that division two runs count for not much in the County Championship, but with current England opener Zak Crawley having ed only 145 from six innings so far, there are plenty of other top-order batters and those in the middle order showing that they are more than capable of stepping up if required.
With Vaibhav Suryavanshi taking all the headlines with his efforts for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League earlier this week, we take a look at who has been enjoying their time at the crease so far in the County Championship Division Two!
Leading Run Scorers
Player | Innings | Runs | Highest Score | Average |
Max Holden | 8 | 507 | 184 | 63.37 |
Wayne Madsen | 6 | 436 | 118 | 87.20 |
Marcus Harris | 6 | 394 | 138 | 78.80 |
Ben Compton | 6 | 383 | 178 | 76.60 |
James Bracey | 7 | 360 | 151* | 90.00 |
Caleb Jewell | 7 | 355 | 83 | 59.16 |
Pete Handscomb | 6 | 322 | 142* | 64.40 |
Ben Geddes | 7 | 315 | 83 | 45.00 |
As ever, there is a wide mix of individuals who are leading the way so far in this campaign! Let's have a look at the motivations of some of those batters.
Max Holden
At 27 years of age, some might say that the Middlesex left-hander needs to make an impact at this level soon or he can wave goodbye to any hopes of an international career.
But the opener has come out fighting in this campaign and except for a return of 31 runs across two innings against Kent has been in fantastic form.
He represented England Under-19s previously but has already made scores of 69 & 184 against Lancashire, 107 versus Glamorgan and 94 against Derbyshire in this campaign.
Holden will play at Lord's in this round of fixtures and more runs against Kent, who include Crawley in their side, could yet provide the England selectors to take notice.
Marcus Harris
There will certainly be no England call-up for Lancashire's left-handed opener Marcus Harris but the 32 year old Australian international is doing his chances of a call-up for the World Test Championship Final no harm at all.
Forget the IPL or the BBL where he struggled earlier this year, Harris has a game which is more traditional and suits the four-day game. The opener has made at least one half-century in each of his three appearances for Lancashire this season and also hit a century against Middlesex in his first innings.
With an average of 25.29 from 26 Test innings, many thought that Australia had moved on from Harris but scoring runs for fun in England may just offer him a place back into the side for the one-off clash against South Africa.
Ben Compton
With plenty of England cricket fans calling for Zak Crawley's time at the top of the order in the Test side to come to an end, some are asking for his county team-mate, Ben Compton to take his place!
At the age of 31, the left-hander has scored over 5200 first class runs at an average of 45.32 and certainly looks like he wants the selectors to focus on the numbers in the runs column this time around with scores of 124 not out and 178 in his last two games.
