IPL 2025 - Where Next For Chennai Super Kings

Well, well, well. It certainly wasn't supposed to be like this after 10 games of the 2025 season for Chennai Super Kings, one of only two teams to have won the IPL five times previously.
With a painful record which reads eight defeats and two wins, CSK became the first team to be eliminated from the 2025 competition and all they realistically have to play for is the opportunity to finish as high as eighth!
Never before has the franchise missed out on the play-offs in successive seasons but after finishing in fifth, missing out on the next stage by virtue of net-run-rate, that has come to .
We look at where it went wrong for CSK this year and try to find some positives for the future for those at Chepauk to cling on to!
An IPL Season To Forget
Funnily enough, it all started so well... CSK got off to a winning start when they beat Mumbai Indians by four wickets with five balls remaining in match three of this year's IPL.
Afghanistan wrist spinner Noor Ahmad took 4/18 with left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed picking up three wickets before opener Rachin Ravindra and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad made half-centuries. But there were signs of the batting not exactly firing in unison with Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Dube, Deepak Hooda and Sam Curran all making single-figure scores in the top six.
Since then, CSK have managed only one further victory, a surprise one against Lucknow Super Giants, and although an injury to skipper Gaikwad has not helped as it also ruled him out of the tournament, under MS Dhoni's leadership they have not been able to turn the ship around.
The Batting Numbers
Player | Runs | Average |
Shivam Dube | 248 | 31.00 |
Rachin Ravindra | 191 | 27.28 |
Ravindra Jadeja | 183 | 26.14 |
MS Dhoni | 151 | 25.16 |
Vijay Shankar | 118 | 39.33 |
The average column tells a powerful story for CSK this season with only Shivam Dube and Vijay Shankar delivering over 30 and both topping up their averages with two not-outs.
Dewald Brevis has ed the franchise late as an injury replacement and he looks to be a good bet for their leading run scorer in up-coming games after hitting 74 runs across his two innings with a strike-rate of 145.09.
The Bowling Numbers
Player | Wickets | Strike-rate |
Noor Ahmad | 15 | 14.00 |
Khaleel Ahmed | 14 | 15.2 |
Matheesh Pathirana | 9 | 19.1 |
Ravindra Jadeja | 7 | 22.1 |
Ravichandran Ashwin | 5 | 28.8 |
CSK have proved that an under-performing batting line-up is unable to be carried by some talented bowlers although Noor Ahmad and Khaleel Ahmed have both produced excellent and consistent showings.
Indeed, both could still go on and take the Purple Cap which would be some achievement considering how badly the franchise has performed.
Ruturaj Gaikwad will provide a big boost to the batting next season but there will need to be a couple of big gs in that department as well to get this once great team back competing.
