T20 Spring Challenge is a new women’s domestic tournament in Australia where the WBBL teams will compete for the title. The 2024 season of WBBL has been shortened to just 43 matches.
The introduction of a new domestic T20 league right before the WBBL ensures there will be no shortage of cricket in Australia. However, all the marquee players are busy representing their country in the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Originally, Tahlia McGrath and Sophie Devine were named the captains for Adelaide and Perth respectively. Since the two are on national duty, we will see some new faces step up and lead the sides in the inaugural T20 Spring Challenge 2024.
Amanda-Jade Wellington, who’s a regular in the Australian national side, was left out of the T20 World Cup squad. The right-arm leg-break bowler is a good contender for the ADS skipper’s job.
For Perth Scorchers, in addition to Sophie Devine, others like Beth Mooney, Alana King, and Maddy Green are also not available. We expect Mathilda Carmichael who’s featured 56 WBBL games to be in the leadership role for PRS.

Adelaide Strikers will begin their T20 Spring Challenge campaign against Perth Scorchers at home. The Strikers won the WBBL 2023 title under Tahlia McGrath whose all-round performance in the Final helped Strikers defend 125 runs.
Amanda Jade-Wellington was the top wicket-taker in that match with 3 for 16 and will be available for the inaugural season of the T20 Spring Challenge. In the absence of Megan Schutt and Darcie Brown, ADS Women will look up to Jemma Barsby and Anesu Mushangwe with the ball.
Kaite Mack will need a new opening partner in this tournament. Courtney Neale could be the one to feature in the top order. Wicket-keeper batter Bridget Patterson will be one to watch out for in the middle order.
Maddie Penna is another batter who featured in the lower-middle order last season but could not make any big impact. There are many such lesser-known faces in the squad. Annie O’Neil, another middle-order batter with only 4 WBBL innings and a total of 10 runs to her name has made it to the ADS Women’s squad of 13 for this tournament.
The squad is quite heavy on spinners and that should work in the favor of the Strikers on this pitch. Maggie Clark, Paris Hall, and Ellie Johnston are some of the new faces who will be leading the batting effort for ADS Women.

Perth Scorchers were knocked out in the Eliminator in WBBL 2023. They will be eager to start this tournament on a winning note after dominating the previous Big Bash season.
It is a great opportunity for all teams to find new rising stars ahead of the 2024 WBBL season. The Scorchers will be missing many of the key players who were part of the initial squad for the T20 Spring Challenge.
Sophie Devine, Alana King, and Marizanne Kapp were included in the squad. These all-rounders would have added a lot of strength to this lineup. However, in their absence, Charis Bekker and Taneale Peschel are the only all-rounders available in the squad.
Both Bekker and Peschel will make it to the XI and will be crucial with the ball. In the batting department, Chloe Piparo who played at number 3 last year in WBBL will have to step up and lead the batting effort for the Scorchers Women.
Maddy Drake and Mathilda Carmichael are other lesser-known batters who will be seen in important roles for PRS Women in this tournament.
Perth Scorchers should be making an announcement soon about any new names being added to their squad. Only 9 players from that squad are available and we should wait for further announcements to know the complete picture. As of now, we can only go by the squads that were announced earlier and speculate the probable lineups.
Fortunately for Perth Scorchers, all the bowlers are available. They weren’t relying on them in the first place given the kind of all-rounders they had. However, now it is all up to the likes of Piepa Cleary, Holly Ferling, and Lilly Mills to deliver with the ball.

There will be cloudy skies in Adelaide with a high of 19 degrees Celsius on the matchday. We don’t expect any rain during or before the game and there should be an uninterrupted T20 match at the Karen Rolton Oval.
It is a balanced pitch with the bowlers having a slight edge. It is the spinners who will be crucial in the bowling department. The average 1st innings score in the last 10 matches is 142 runs. However, anything around 150-160 has been chased down quite comfortably at the Karen Rolton Oval. We reckon a 170+ score will be a match-winning total.
Teams bowling first have won 6 of the last 10 matches played at this venue. The spinners have enjoyed great success at this venue. Bowling first will have a slight advantage in this match as the bowling team will have enough time to get an idea of the pitch and their batting combinations.
Though both teams will be missing their key players and look like they’re equally inexperienced, Adelaide Strikers still have their key bowler along with some other players who were part of the title-winning WBBL squad last season. Adelaide Strikers will start with a slight edge in this contest and will be favorites in our match prediction.
