The first week of the IPL 2024 was a blockbuster with several twists and close finishes. And, the second week promises several tightly contested encounters, and this repeat of the big final last year between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans is certainly one of them.
Chennai did come up trumps in the rain-affected final, chasing above 170 in 15 overs despite being pushed on to the backfoot earlier in the innings. They also got the better of Gujarat in the qualifier at Chennai to seal their berth in the finals. Gujarat won their other three encounters with the match going right down to the last over on each occasion.
That gives you an idea of how evenly matched these teams are and that they don’t leave anything on the table. Gujarat Titans have won three of those five encounters chasing, and Chennai Super Kings won one defending a target and another battling their nerves in a tense chase pursuing 170+ target in a rain-affected final at Ahmedabad.

With four 50+ scores and a tally of 300+ runs, new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has a liking for Gujarat Titans. No other CSK batsman have been able to show a similar level of consistency as Gaikwad’s.
For example, 94 by Ambati Rayudu and 93 by Devon Conway are the second and third in the list of top run getters for CSK against Gujarat and both of them won’t feature in this match. Shivam Dube, has managed 71 runs off 5 hits against Gujarat and may want to improve his average and strike rate in this fixture.
CSK haven’t been able to get up to a score above 180 yet against Gujarat and they may want to change that going into this encounter.
But for that to happen, CSK batsman need to find a way to bat around Ruturaj Gaikwad. On the bowling-front, SL slinger Matheesha Pathirana had most impact for CSK with the ball against Gujarat Titans, with 6 wickets from 3 games followed by Ravindra Jadeja 4 wickets from 4 games and Maheesh Theekshana with 4 wickets from 3 games. The hosts will look to stick with the same blueprint- get their spinners to strangle down Gujarat Titans batters on a dry and slow wicket.
Deepak Chahar’s form against GT, 3 wickets from 3 games, is something the hosts will be bothered about, too.
The captain of CSK, Ruturaj Gaikwad has a phenomenal record against GT (310 runs in 5 matches). The last time he played against the Gujarat Titans at Chennai he scored 60 runs in 40 balls. Given his recent form and record against Gujarat Titans, we back Ruturaj Gaikwad to score over 28.5 runs in todays match.
Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Daryl Mitchell, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sameer Rizvi, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman.

Four batsman from the Gujarat Giants camp, namely openers Shubman Gill (162 runs from 5 hits) and Wriddhiman Saha (169 runs from 5 hits), one-drop player from Tamil Nadu Sai Sudharsan (118 from 2) and attacking middle order batsman David Miller (113 from 4) have each compiled 100 runs against CSK.
They’ve certainly played well as a team compared to their batting counterparts from the South. Their batting looked a bit clueless against raw pacers from Mumbai Indians the other night, with Bumrah and Coetzee combining to take 5/41 from their 8 overs. Lack of fast-medium pacers in the CSK camp that can clock above 145 consistently will put a smile on GT batters’ faces.
On the bowling front, their bowlers pulled off a tremendous recovery act to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against MI. Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan put the brakes on the scoring rate, and kept the scoreboard pressure intact for the incoming batsmen in the death overs.
Azmatullah Omarzai, the second Afghan in the team, operated beautifully with the new ball picking up two crucial wickets. Spencer Johnson debut went from horrific to impactful with an excellent second over that saw him give away 8 runs in exchange for two crucial wickets. Mohit Sharma, who knows a thing or two about the surface at Chennai, will prove to be extremely handy. His two wickets against MI will give him a big confidence boost.
The hometown boy Sai Sudharshan smashed 45 runs in his last outing against the Mumbai Indians. The young left-handed batsman has been in fine form recently, consistently scoring runs in every match he has played. He boasts a very good record against CSK and knows the pitch conditions at Chennai. We expect him to continue his good run of form and score over 23.5 runs against CSK.
Shubman Gill (c), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Sai Sudharsan, Vijay Shankar, David Miller, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Sai Kishore, Noor Ahmad/Spencer Johnson, Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma.

The pitch played out better than expected in the opening fixture between CSK and RCB. If a similar surface is presented to these teams, we could have a high scoring game on the cards. The weather is anticipated to hold out fine for the game and the conditions are likely to be a bit dry and humid.

High TurnThis match will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai. Chasing has been the overwhelming choice for a few games here, and apparently it will be the case tomorrow too. Gujarat Titans played a match against CSK here early last season and ended up losing by 15 runs.
The total aggregate score in the last match played at M.A Chidambaram Stadium is 349 runs. The total average aggregate score in CSK vs GT head to head matches is 337 runs. Our prediction is the total aggregate score in today's match to be over 332.5 runs.
Gujarat Titans have had it easy chasing against Chennai Super Kings, winning 3 out of 4 times. CSK elected to field first to throw them off in the final last year and it worked out in the end. Expect the team winning the toss to ask the opposition to have a bat first.
Gujarat Titans have had a great track record against CSK in their limited time at the IPL so far. Their batting runs deep and the bowling has plenty of variety with Noor Ahmad on standby to play the third spinner role if the surface demands it. Gujarat Titans to win a closely fought match.
Our prediction is for Gujarat Titans to win this contest.
