Delhi Capitals face off against Rajasthan Royals in a key encounter that will more or less decide whether they will still be in contention for a spot in the playoffs. With only three matches to go, the door is starting to close on them, and they need to hurry up and string together a few wins so they can finish the group stages at 16.
A win against the firm favourites and the team to beat this season- Rajasthan Royals- at home will give them the right launchpad. Royals, having lost a nervy thriller against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad, will be determined to get back to winning ways.
Despite losing their way early on, Rajasthan Royals’ middle order batsmen steadied the ship and carried on with the chase. They did extremely well to keep up with the climbing run rate, and took the game deep. However, just when they looked set to close the game out, they faltered just before the finish line.
In the recent five encounters between these teams, RR is slightly ahead with 3 wins and 2 losses. Royals also have the edge over Delhi Capitals on the overall head to head, leading 15-13.

Delhi Capitals started their season poorly, with 1 win from 5 games.
But with the young gun Jake Fraser McGurk (259 runs from 6 games at a blistering strike rate of 233) settling into the XI and with the middle order batsmen Tristan Stubbs (277 runs from 11 games at SR 185) and Rishabh Pant (398 runs from 11 games at SR 159) finding form and consistency with the bat, the dynamic of the batting group changed.
More firepower and depth to the batting unit, the batsmen went about their job with more confidence and competed better, which allowed them to pick up 4 wins in their next 6 games.
However, their job is not quite done- qualifying to the playoffs. Their loss against KKR at home last week was disappointing. They lost half their side in the eleventh over with just 93 runs on the board, and finished at 153 thanks to a strong rear-guard action by bowlers. In defence, their opening bowlers began poorly and allowed KKR openers to get out of their blocks pretty quickly.
The spinners failed to take control over the middle phase and let the KKR batsmen romp home with more than twenty odd balls to spare. On the bowling front, Delhi’s quicks have mostly been poor whereas the spin twins Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have impressed in patches.
The left arm spin duo has kept things tight in general, even though they haven’t been able to produce breakthroughs at will. A key drawback for Delhi’s pace bowling unit this season has been their lack of control and inability to bowl to plans.
The captain of Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant, is the leading run-scorer for his team. In his last three innings, Pant has scored 27, 29, and 88*. He has been in phenomenal touch and his stats are outstanding at Arun Jaitley Stadium (930 runs in 26 matches). Given his recent form, we back him to score over 27.5 runs in today's match.

Rajasthan Royals are the team to beat this season. Just two losses in ten matches is fantastic result, and Royals as a team have been brilliant this season. The top 4- Jaiswal, Buttler, Samson and Parag- have been the engine of their batting with each of them scoring over 300 runs.
Having scored over 400 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 160, Parag has dispelled all doubts about his coming-of-age with some consistent performances against champion sides. Royals bowlers, especially Trent Boult at the top, Yuzi Chahal thru the middle, Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan at the death, have been remarkable.
Ashwin, by his own standards, has had a shocker of a season managing just 2 wickets in 9 games from the 35 odd overs he sent down. What stands out in Royals this season is that someone puts their hand up, steps in, and rescues their team from a setback or puts them in a much stronger position than they were in when they walked out. And it applies to both the batting group and bowling group.
For example, the West Indian duo Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell might not have made a significant contribution with the bat, but Hetmyer’s late-order heroics won them a game, and Rovman Powell almost pulled off a stunning win against SRH the other day.
Jaiswal has found his form at the right time just before the playoffs, which is a huge boost for the Royals. He has scored 67, 24, and 104* in his three innings. On a good batting track in Delhi, Jaiswal will look to capitalize on the short square boundaries and score over 27.5 runs in today's match.

Three matches, six innings and five 200+ scores. One score above 260, one above 250, one in the 240s, and two in the 220s. That puts into perspective how conducive to batting the Delhi strip has been this season. The forecast seems clear for this night contest, and we shouldn’t be having any form of weather interruption whatsoever.

Minimal TurnThe match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In the eight encounters the two sides have had here across several seasons, the hosts have gotten the better of the visitors five times. No doubt they will be hoping to extend that lead.
The games at Arun Jaitley Stadium have been high-scoring this season, with the total aggregate scores in the three matches played being 465, 444, and 504. The short boundaries and flat batting pitches have resulted in high-scoring games, and we expect no different in today's match where two top-heavy batting units clash.
Delhi Capitals would love to have a bat first if the pitch and conditions were batting-friendly. Royals would look at this the same way, however they wouldn’t mind chasing either given how close they came to winning the match against SRH away from home.
We reckon Rajasthan Royals will emerge victorious at the end of this contest, mainly by way of better strength and depth in both their bowling and batting groups.
Our prediction is for Rajasthan Royals to win this contest.
