Dubai Capitals had a fantastic outing in their first match of this season.
Same cannot be said for the Sharjah Warriors, who resigned to a 31-run defeat in their opener against the current champions Gulf Giants close. These teams met each other two times in the last season—the Warriors took the win in an encounter and the other one ended up being a no result. The Capitals will look to open their against the Warriors with a win.
They were on the charge against the MI Emirates and ticked off boxes with the ball, bat and on the field. The Warriors, however, will hope that their middle order learns from the mistakes they made in the previous game. Their chase lost steam when the brittle middle order allowed the opposition to run through them.
Dubai Capitals would be pleased with their performance with bat and ball in their tournament opener. All-rounders Sikander Raza and Jason Holder showed their calibre with the ball and wrecked the MI Emirates batting line-up, picking 3 wickets apiece. Netherlands paceman Paul Van Meekeren was the only bowler to go wicketless, while the rest of the Capitals’ bowlers picked up 9 wickets and reduced the MI Emirates 30-40 runs shy of a challenging total.
Chasing 160, David Warner went early, throwing his wicket away to Trent Boult. But Afghan batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz and young Aussie batsman Jake Fraser- McGurk put on a T20 power hitting master class, carting 12 fours and 8 sixes between them. Stunned by the assault, MI Emirates gave up and let the Capitals batsman run away with the chase. Even thirty or forty extra runs to chase wouldn’t have made much of a difference, as Capitals romped home with seven wickets and 4 overs to spare.
The Capitals couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to their campaign. Their preparation paid off the other night and they’ll be hoping to dominate with the ball and bat—in the same way--against the Warriors.

After a disappointing ILT20 last year, Sharjah Warriors would have wanted to open this year’s campaign with a bang. But it wasn’t to be. Reigning champs Gulf Giants were simply too good for them, winning by 31 runs. The Warriors couldn’t keep the Giants openers in check and let them get away to an electric start.
By the time both of them were removed, Giants had 114 on the scoreboard from 11.4 overs and were looking good to post the first two hundred of the season. But SL spinner Mahesh Theekshana single-handedly stopped the Giants from getting there, as he bamboozled their middle order with some quality spin bowling. His 4-wicket haul was the lone highlight in what was otherwise a mediocre bowling effort. Chasing 199 for victory, the Warriors openers took full toll of the fielding restrictions and finished the powerplay with 56 runs.
They were on course to doing something special but opener Martin Guptill lost his wicket and his partner Johnson Charles departed soon, with Jamie Overton removing both the openers in successive overs to end their onslaught. Captain Tom Kohler-Core provided a few lusty blows but he was dismissed for 19 from 12, leaving the Warriors needing 75 from 6 overs. But the fate of the match was sealed in the next four overs, as the English-dominant Giants bowling attack kept the pressure on and chipped away at the wickets without giving too many runs. Eventually, the Warriors lost by 31 runs, thanks to Chris Woakes who provided late-order hitting to cut down the deficit.

The pitch here was great to bat on the other night. And, by the looks of it, the strip for this game will be great for batting on game day. Besides, the Capitals were pleased to see the dew roll in during their chase and took full advantage of it. We may expect to see some dew in this fixture too.

Average TurnDubai International Cricket Stadium is going to host this match. Last time the Warriors were here, they demolished the 178 run target set by the Capitals and galloped to victory inside 15 overs.
Dubai Capitals will most likely opt to have a bowl first. They restricted their opposition to a decent total and made brilliant use of the conditions to chase the score down. Expect them to stick to the same strategy.
The Warriors have the game and the squad to challenge any team in this tournament, but Dubai Capitals began this year’s campaign with a thumping win and will be looking to dislodge the Warriors in a similar manner.
