The men from Durban eased to the playoffs comfortably, winning 7 out of 10 fixtures, only to be stunned in the first qualifier by the Sunrisers at Cape Town in the first qualifier.
In contrast, the men in Yellow stuttered their way through to the qualifiers and only managed to sneak home with a dramatic final fixture over the Durban’s Super Giants where Donovan Ferreira unleashed himself in the back end to steal a win. But, the Super Kings were ruthless in the eliminator and made short work of the paltry total that the Royals managed to put on board.
Overall, the Super Kings have a clear edge over the Super Giants on the head to head record, leading 3-1. But the honors for this season are shared with the Super Giants defeating Super Kings in Durban, and the Super Kings holding fort in Wanderers last week.
This fixture — the second qualifier— is shaping up to be a thrilling contest for the players and the fans.

Halfway into the first qualifier, Durban’s Super Giants was in a great position to reach the final after having bowled incredibly well to restrict the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to 157.
The defending champs were well-poised to make a huge score (61/1 from 8 overs) before rain came pelting down. When the play recommenced, they lost momentum as wickets started to tumble, thanks to some excellent bowling by DSG. Captain Keshav Maharaj led from the front picking up two wickets while Junior Dala and Naveen ul Haq produced key breakthroughs in critical junctures.
Chasing 158, DSG lost both the first three wickets with nothing substantial on the scoreboard. The Jansen-Baartmen duo ed for the openers and kept homing in on excellent areas on a moist wicket in helpful conditions as they continued to trouble the incoming batsmen. Barring Wiaan Mulder and Heinrich Klaasen, no other batsman found batting comfortable.
De Kock’s painful time in the middle continued, as he scratched around to make a laborious 20 off 23 balls that didn’t help DSG’s cause one bit. The Super Giants batsmen were pretty good with the bat throughout the tournament but saved their worst for the most important fixture. They’ll be hoping their batting finds its mojo again in this crucial second qualifier against JSK.
Quinton de Kock, Matthew Breetzke (wk), Tony de Zorzi, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Jon-Jon Smuts, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj (capt), Reece Topley, Junior Dala, Naveen-ul-Haq.

JSK made it to the top 4 after a lot of struggle, but they eased into the second qualifier with an outstanding all-round performance against Paarl Royals in the eliminator at the Wanderers stadium. Sam Cook, Nandre Burger and Imran Tahir came together to put up a spectacular bowling display, after Joburg captain Faf du Plessis chose to field first at the toss. Replacing injured Lizaad Williams was Sam Cook, who was on fire and went on to pick 4 wickets on debut.
Burger was switched on with the ball and took three wickets including swashbuckling opener Jason Roy. Imran Tahir, was at his usual best, picking two wickets with the ball and some remarkable catches on field, diving and running around.
After the bowlers restricted the Royals to 139, the JSK openers Du Plooy and Du Plessis kicked off their chase with some powerful strokeplay. They brought up their second hundred run partnership in as many matches, as they were in a real hurry to finish off the chase.
With two half centuries in two matches, both the openers will be feeling extremely good about their form with the bat. They know they have a crucial role to play in the second qualifier, with the rest of the batsmen not looking very free-flowing in the middle.
Faf du Plessis (capt), Leus du Plooy, Reeza Hendricks, Sibonelo Makhanya, Moeen Ali, Donovan Ferreira (wk), Doug Bracewell, Dayyaan Galiem, Sam Cook, Nandre Burger, Imran Tahir.

With 3 totals over 200 and several in the 160-175 range, the strip at the centre favours batting heavily. However, batsmen need to take their time to get set, and go after the bowling once they get their eye in.
The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg is hosting this key fixture: the second qualifier of this year’s SA20. Teams chasing have enjoyed great success here this season , with 5 out of 6 matches here won by teams batting second. The weather forecast is not too encouraging, with a fair amount of cloud cover expected and occasional thunderstorms in spots this evening.
The mantra for succeeding at the venue this season is fairly straightforward: win toss, put the opposition in to bat, restrict them to a par total, and chase it down. There’s absolutely no doubt what would be on the mind of the captain winning the toss.
Playing at the Wanderers certainly gives the Joburg Super Kings an unique advantage, yet we think Durban Super Giants will win this encounter and earn the right to head to Cape Town for the title clash with the Sunrisers.
