A closer look at final standings on the points table will tell you that there’s hardly any difference between these teams. Both finished their group stages with 7 wins each; however, the defending champs, Sunrisers came out as the top qualifier due to a slender one-point lead over the Super Giants. There’s not a massive difference between them on NRR, as well.
But there’s a huge gap between these teams and the rest. To put things in perspective, third-placed Paarl Royals are a long way away at 22 points and the fourth-placed Joburg Super Kings are finished the group stages with 17 points. It goes to show these two teams have been on a rampage the whole season against their opponents. These teams met each other twice in the group stages, with both teams winning once.
The Sunrisers lead the overall head-to-head 2-1, and this sets up nicely for an epic showdown in the first qualifier.

Going into the last match of the group stages against the Joburg Super Kings, the Durban’s Super Giants juggernaut was on a roll. Having won four matches in a row, they were in the driver’s seat to win their last fixture before JSK batsmen pulled off a heist scoring 45 runs from 17 balls to clinch a tough run chase.
The Super Giants would not read too much into the loss though. They don’t have much to worry about. Most of their batsmen are in great nick, particularly Matthew Breezke and Heinrich Klaasen who’ve amassed more than 300 runs each in this competition so far. Also amongst the runs are JJ Smuts and allrounder Wiaan Mulder. Good on them for putting their hand up and scoring runs consistently when top order batsmen Quinton de Kock and Tony de Zorzi are going through a rare lean patch.
DSG have been good with the ball too. Spinners are leading the charge for the Super Giants this season, with left arm twirlers Noor Ahmad and captain Keshav Maharaj picking up 23 wickets between them. Pacer Reece Topley is doing a decent job with the ball, and he’s great in Naveen ul Haq and Junior Dala who took 7 scalps including a fiver in 2 appearances so far.

Playing an attacking brand of cricket on a consistent basis has put the defending champions at an advantageous position in their quest for a back to back title triumph.
A 35-run drubbing at the hands of second-placed Super Giants and an agonizing 3-run defeat to Capitals are the two instances in which they tripped up on an otherwise spotless campaign.
22-year-old local player Jordan Hermann, and English batsman Tom Abell are in serious form with the bat at the top of the order. Hard-hitting Tristan Stubbs is striking at an impressive rate and is averaging above 57, scoring 231 runs from 9 matches. Captain Aiden Markram is not having a great tournament but is holding together the middle order, making sure they don’t lose a pile of wickets quickly.
From a bowling perspective, Australian import Daniel Worrall and local pacemen Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen have been excellent so far, picking up the lion’s share of the opposition wickets between them. The same cannot be said about the spin duo Liam Dawson and Simon Harmer, but they have been economical in the middle bowling some tight overs. The Sunrisers have several in-form batsmen and bowlers to help them go all the way for the second time in two years.

All eyes will be on the skies, as the weather forecast suggests we might be in for a cloudy evening with odd showers. With the moisture locked in the pitch and some clouds overhead, we reckon seamers will play a major role in this fixture.
The Newlands Stadium, Cape Town will play host to this match. This venue has been particularly good for the team batting second this season, with chasing teams going on to win thrice in five matches. Of those two losses, one was narrow with the margin of defeat just four runs.
In qualifiers, the team winning the toss usually opts to bat first, put an imposing total on board, and let the scoreboard pressure do its thing on the chasing team. Super Giants, in particular, will approve of this strategy considering all their 7 wins came when they batted first. But with the weather likely to intervene, teams wouldn't mind batting second in a rain curtailed game.
Whether it'll rain or not, we are in for an epic battle. These two heavy-weight teams will go hard at each other. There’s hardly anything to distinguish between both teams but we guess Durban’s Super Giants will come away with the victory in this fixture purely on batting credentials.
We are backing Durban's Super Giants to win this match.
