Any clash between England and Australia will see the intensity go up a notch and even though this tour is beginning at the back end of the summer there will be no shortage of animosity and rivalry between the two camps!
Indeed, with an Ashes Series now only 14 months away, young players on both sides will want to use this series as an opportunity to show they can perform under the spotlight.
The last time these sides met in this format it was Australia who won by 36 runs but both teams are much changed from that fixture in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The fans at the Rose Bowl will no doubt be largely ing England, but at a ground which offers something for both batters and bowlers, don't be surprised if this inspires the Australians!

With Jos Buttler out of the series with a recurring hamstring injury and Matthew Mott's two year stint as England white-ball coach coming to an end after the T20 World Cup, there will be fresh leadership on and off the pitch for the hosts in this opener.
Phil Salt takes on the captaincy and if his batting is anything to judge by then England will be an ultra-attacking side with him in charge! At the top of the order we expect him to be ed by Surrey's Will Jacks and Jordan Cox will surely get his international debut in this match. There could also be debuts for Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell, both of who impressed with bat and ball during this year's T20 Blast and The Hundred.
With the ball, there are some familiar faces and all spectators will be longing to see Jofra Archer crank up the pace against the Australian batters, Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley also come into this game with very strong short-format records.
Sam Curran has been in top notch form off-late smashing 52.24 and 102 runs in the last three T20 matches he has played. With Jos Butler unavailable for the 1st T20I, England might Promote Curran to number 4 and given his current form, we back the southpaw to score over 17.5 runs in today's game.

After finding Scotland as more than hospitable hosts during the three match series in Edinburgh, Australia can expect a far tougher test south of the border during this T20I series. But a tough test is what Australian sports professionals live for and those who excelled in Scotland will be looking to bring that form into this opening match.
At the top of the order, Travis Head is one of the most in-form openers in white ball cricket and has been so for over 18 months. He deals mainly in boundaries and alongside his opening partner, Jake Fraser-McGurk, often hits more sixes than fours!
With the ball, Sean Abbott has an excellent T20 record in this country after strong stints with Surrey in the T20 Blast. Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Aaron Hardie and Marcus Stoinis should also be able to get the ball to move in the air or off the pitch in Southampton.
The Australian captain has been consistently playing quickfire cameos. He has scored 37, 39, and 31 runs in the last three T20I matches. Against England, Marsh has scored 168 runs in 6 matches and averages 33.6. Given his consistent batting and recent form, he is the best batter to bet on in today's game.

The conditions are not going to be like ones which Australians enjoy at home although they have just acclimatised with three games north of the border in Scotland. According to the forecast there will be cloud cover throughout with the temperature dropping from 14 degrees at the start of the T20I.

The Rose Bowl has hosted many famous clashes of international cricket and none more so than the first ever T20I between England and Australia ahead of the 2005 Ashes Series. The bounce and pace of the pitch is consistent but there will also be some turn for the spinners at this late stage of the home summer. Whoever bats first will be looking to post a total of 170+.
The average total match score in the last three T20 games played at the Rose Bowl is 341 runs. The last three head to head games between England and Australia have been high scoring with the average total match scores being 374 runs. Given the good batting surface and the explosiveness in the batting lineups of both the teams, we predict the total match score to be over 339 runs.
Seven of the 11 T20Is at the Rose Bowl have been won by the team batting first and that includes the last three which were won by margins of between 50 and 90 runs. Therefore, we predict that both captains will come out for the toss planning to bat first in this contest.
Both teams will not be at full strength for this T20I series but in cool home conditions we expect the England squad to be able to produce the best and most consistent cricket. Australia will be a threat as they always are in any format but we anticipate it will be the hosts who leave Southampton 1-0 up with two more to play.
