Any England-Australia series never fails to keep the thrill alive till the last game. The situation is similar once again. After losing the first game, England pulled off a thrilling chase at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff to level the 1-1. The series decider will be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester on 15th September from 7 pm onwards.
England started the series in the absence of their skipper Jose Buttler. The responsibility was then shifted to Phillip Salt to lead the English attack having multiple all-rounders. The first game proved costly to the hosts as Australia beat them by 28 runs. Aussie opener Travis Head scored 59 off 23 with 8 fours and 4 sixes to help his team set a target of 179 runs for England. Livingstone took three wickets in the first innings. The bowling brilliance from Sean Abbott and Josh Hazelwood kept England on their toes. Australia won the game by 28 runs.
But England took revenge in the next game. They leveled the T20I series against Australia with a three-wicket win in Cardiff on Friday (September 13), thanks to a standout performance from the seasoned Liam Livingstone. Australia set a competitive total of 193/6, driven by Jake Fraser-McGurk’s first half-century and a brisk 42 off 26 balls from Josh Inglis. During the chase, England found themselves at 79/3 before a game-changing 90-run partnership off 47 deliveries between Livingstone, who smashed 87 off 47 balls, and Jacob Bethell, contributing 44 off 24 balls, guided them to victory with an over remaining.
Australia will miss fast bowler Xavier Bartlett due to a side strain. He is the third fast bowler sidelined during the English tour, following Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith. Left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis has been added to the squad for the final game.
Stand-by skipper Phill Salt will be happy with the team's performance in the second T20I which kept the series alive. He will open the innings with Will Jacks. Salt scored 39 runs in the second game at a strike rate of 169.57. Jacks has failed to score with the bat so far. Jordan Cox will come at number three. After putting 17 runs on the board in the first game, he got out on zero in the second. Cox scored 205 runs in this year’s Vitality Blast at a strike rate of 178.26.
All eyes will be on Liam Livingstone, as the all-rounder turned the tables in favor of his team in the second game. Livingstone is the leading run-scorer of the series with 124 runs at a strike rate of 167.56. The all-rounder is also the leading wicket-taker with 5 wickets in two games at an economy of 7.60. He will be the batter to watch out for. Jacob Bethel and Sam Curran will team up with him in the middle. Bethell scored 44 off 24 in the second game while putting up a partnership of 90 runs with Livingstone for the fourth wicket.
Reece Topley will lead the bowling attack with Saqib Mahmood and Brydon Carse. The trio has taken just 5 wickets in the first two games. Mahmood was picked after taking 12 wickets for Lancashire in the Vitality Blast this season. If Jofra Archer is fit to play he will replace Carse. Archer is the leading wicket-taker for England this year with 15 wickets in 11 games at an economy of 7.43.
Key Players: Liam Livingstone, Phill Salt, Jofra Archer.
Livingstone's 87-run innings from 47 balls in the second T20I propelled England to victory. He has utterly dominated the Australian bowlers in both T20Is, leading the series in runs with 124. Considering his impressive form, we predict another exceptional performance from Livingstone in today's match.
Philip Salt (c & wk), Will Jacks, Jordan Cox, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood, Reece Topley.
After losing three of their pacers to injuries, skipper Travis Head will be in a dilemma to find the ideal 11. He will open the innings with Matthew short. Head has 90 runs in two games with the highest strike rate of 243.34 in the series. He will be the batter to watch out for. Short has played a mirror image of Livingstone from Australia. The all-rounder has 69 runs with the bat and 5 wickets with the ball.
Mitchell Marsh missed the second game due to an illness. He will be back in the squad if fit to lead the side. The Aussie middle-order is filled with power hitters. Josh Inglis will lead the order with Stoinis and Tim David. Ingli has 79 runs so far at a strike rate of more than 150. But the other two have failed to impress with the bat. Tim David might be left on the bench to keep the place of Jake Fraser-McGurk in playing eleven, who scored a half-century in the second game.
Sean Abbott will lead the bowling unit with Cameroon Green, Aaron Hardie, and Cooper Conolly. Abbott has 5 wickets in two games while Green and Stoinis have picked a wicket each. Bowling will be a key problem for the visitors. Ben Dwarshuis has ed the squad as a replacement for Xavier Bartlett.
