Any Test Match at Lord's is a spectacular experience for fans and players alike with this week's contest between England and Sri Lanka expected to be no different! It is always interesting to see how the visiting XI are able to perform at a venue steeped in history but one which gives opportunities to pace bowlers with the slope and batters with the true and consistent nature of the wicket.
In spite of some poor weather in Manchester, the First Test was an entertaining affair with both sides having to show patience and an ability to knuckle down as well as attacking flair.
England are in fine form in this format at home but they will not be at full strength once again so there could be an opportunity for the tourists if their top players are able to put in top performances.
After England took the field with an almost unrecognisable Test side from only 18 months earlier at Old Trafford, the team will have an even more in-experienced look at Lord's after pace-supremo Mark Wood was ruled out due to a strain sustained in the First Test which prevented him bowling on day four. He s captain Ben Stokes and opener Zak Crawley on the sidelines with question marks also against Chris Woakes who appeared to be struggling with a groin injury during the final exchanges on Saturday.
Unavailability for some means opportunity for others and Dan Lawrence will get another chance at the top of the order after his scores of 30 and 34 in Manchester. Ollie Pope will captain the side once more and there will be a Test recall for Olly Stone who hasn't played for his country in this format since June 2021!
Young left-arm pacer Josh Hull has been called up for the first time but is not expected to make his debut in a side who will once again look to Joe Root, who with 42 and 62 not out in Manchester provided some much needed experience to go alongside the aggressive and clean-hitting stroke play of keeper-batter Jamie Smith.

After finding themselves 3/6 on the first morning of the Old Trafford Test and then 2/1 after conceding a first innings deficit of 122 runs, Sri Lanka showed plenty of grit, determination, character and ability to push England close and only lose by five wickets last week. As a result, we expect Dhananjaya de Silva to announce an unchanged side at Lord's which means a second international cap for Milan Rathnayake who made his debut in Manchester.
With 72 runs when batting at number nine in the first innings and a wicket in each of England's innings with the ball, Rathnayake did not look out of place at this level and we expect his accurate pace bowling, along with that of Vishwa and Asitha Fernando's, to be able to exploit the famous slope at Lord's.
If Sri Lanka are to be genuine contenders to level the series, then they will need their experienced batters to stand up in this Test. There were half-centuries for Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya and Dinesh Chandimal as well as a century from Kamindu Mendis in Manchester and the tourists will be looking for more of the same, plus something from Dimuth Karunaratne at the top of the order, to give themselves the best possible chance.

The conditions look like being very consistent across the five days of this Test with the rain interruptions and cold conditions of Manchester consigned to last week! According to the forecast the temperature will be in the mid-twenties throughout the Test and we should get large periods of sunshine on each day.
At some Test grounds the players arrive on Day One of the match unsure what the pitch will deliver but that is never the case at Lord's. We can expect a very good batting wicket for the first three days of the Test although there could be some grass left on the surface which will interest the bowlers during the first session. Whoever bats first will be targeting 350-400 as a competitive total.
With conditions likely to be best for batting across the opening half of the Test, and with both sides keen to boost the confidence of some of their top order, we predict that both captains will walk to the middle for the toss planning to bat first if they call correctly.
Sri Lanka were behind throughout the opening Test but responded very well with the bat in both of their innings. Therefore, if they could get off to a good start at Lord's this week then they could run England close. The hosts will miss the outright pace of Mark Wood, adding to a lengthy injury list, but we still think they will have enough to come out on top.
