The weekend action kicks off in Vitality Blast with Essex taking on Glamorgan at Chelmsford. Essex’s follow-through after last year’s finale hasn’t gone accordingly to plan, with them managing one win in three games.
Essex lost two games in a row before picking up a win against Middlesex in the third. Returning to Chelmsford has certainly helped them in regaining a bit of form and they’ll be pleased to play another match here.
But the opposition is coming into this contest with a bit of a momentum behind them. Glamorgan completed two victories in two games, after they restricted Sussex in Cardiff earlier this week to complete a 25-run victory. With 2 wins and 1 loss in three games, they’re sitting pretty at the second spot with only Surrey above them.
However, Essex wouldn’t bother facing Glamorgan, a team they’ve comfortably beaten four out of five times in their recent encounters.

Michael Pepper’s 101 off 44 balls, which included ten boundaries and six sixes, powered Essex to their first win of the season with more than twelve balls to spare.
Dean Elgar, the leading run getter for Essex so far, combined with Pepper for a counter-attacking partnership that kept the Eagles in the hunt. With Elgar gone, Cox took on the mantle and scored boundaries at will in his 22-run cameo, but he couldn’t keep going. Paul Walter, known as the Tall Paul in the T20 circuit, made a couple of useful breakthroughs with the ball but couldn’t contribute much to the team’s cause in the chase.
Daniel Sams and Matt Critchley, two key of the Essex Eagles setup, dealt some lusty blows towards the end to wrap up the chase.
Overall, Dean Elgar, Michael Pepper and Jordan Cox have been instrumental in leading the batting effort for Essex, as Alex Rossington, Matt Critchley take time to find their stride. Simon Harmer’s lack of wickets is a big concern for an otherwise ordinary bowling attack that has struggled to keep things tight in the middle and produce any breakthroughs when the team needed one.

Glamorgan defeated Middlesex at Lord’s with Mason Crane and Timm van der Gugten starring with the ball. The bowling duo wrecked Middlesex’s batting order with a brilliant exhibition of pace and spin bowling, picking up 6 wickets between them to skittle them out for 173 in their twenty overs. Andy Gorvin claimed two wickets, removing the dangerous pair Jack Davies and Ryan Higgins in back to back overs.
Chasing 174, Glamorgan lost opener Byrom early but skipper Kyle Carlson (54) and one-down batsman Sam Northeast (67) stitched up a 79-run partnership for the second wicket in just 39 balls to put Glamorgan in the box seat. Chris Cooke was the only other batsman to cross 20, with the rest of the batsman making minor contribution to take the team home to a comfortable victory.
With the bat, Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram are in good touch. Chris Cooke and captain Carlson are getting there, but their strike rates have been pretty good. Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t contributed enough but a highly pedigreed player like him would be itching to turn it around quickly.
With 11 wickets between them, Crane and Van der Gugten have been a force to reckon with, as Sussex and Middlesex batters found out.

Bowlers were sent on a leather hunt last season, with teams plundering three 200+ scores, three 190+ scores and three 180+ scores just to name a few. No doubt why the decks here are expected to favour batting heavily. Weather-wise, the game forecast looks good with no rain threat whatsoever.
This match is going to be played at the County Ground in Chelmsford, where Essex has been dominant of late. Glamorgan’s track record at this ground with 3 wins and 6 losses certainly needs improvement.
Only one of seven matches last season was won by a team batting first, which goes to show that chasing was the default choice of many captains last season. And it could very well be the case this year, as well. Winning the toss and asking the opposition to have a bat first certainly gives teams a distinct edge at this venue.
Essex may have been a little off-colour in the first two fixtures but they’re getting into groove quickly. We reckon that Essex will end up defeating Glamorgan in this clash.
We are backing Essex as winners of this contest.
