Three of the twenty-two encounters between the two sides ended up as no result, but Surrey hold a slight edge over Glamorgan on the head to head with ten wins and nine losses in nineteen completed games so far.
A good chunk of Glamorgan’s wins came in the first 11 matches, with the Welsh team winning 8 of them and losing just 3. However, the rivalry between Surrey and Glamorgan in the vitality blast has seen a dramatic shift.
Surrey’s resurgence began in 2017-18 season and they have won 7 matches to Glamorgan’s 1 in the same period. The lone win that Glamorgan managed three seasons ago could have gone the other way, but Timm Van der Gugten defended 13 runs brilliantly in the last over to give his team a nervy one-run win at Cardiff.
The men from Glamorgan will be hoping to repeat their heroics at the Sophia Gardens where they take on Surrey for their season opener in the T20 Blast.

Perennial underachievers in the T20 blast, Glamorgan have no silverware to show for their participation in the tournament for more than two decades. A semi-final appearance in the 2004 season and 2017 season have been their best results in the tournament’s history, but the current team will be pumped about turning a table for the county.
With the likes of Colin Ingram, Marnus Labuschagne, Mason Crane in the squad, the team does feature players with international experience, but the issue is none of them have solid T20 experience or wisdom to on to the uncapped players in the team.
Former protea batsman Colin Ingram, known for his ability to switch things up through the middle overs, may have something to offer his teammates, though. Other than the left hander, there’s no big name in the mix with plenty of experience playing T20s at a competitive level.
Colin Ingram has had a great county season so far for Glamorgan with close to 800 runs, and captain Kiran Carlson and top order batsman Sam Northeast have had a brilliant run too in the red ball format.
Whether they will be able to carry that form into the shortest format is something that we need to wait and watch. Bowling stocks look a bit depleted with the departure of Pakistani left arm seamer Mir Hamza. Mason Crane, Tim Van der Gugten, James Harris and Andy Gorvin will be a key part of the attack with part timers like Colin Ingram or Marnus Labuschagne rolling their arm over to complete the quota of overs.

Surrey, the inaugural champions and three-time runner ups, look a competitive outfit that’s ready to go. A semi-final exit last season, fourth overall, will urge the Surrey Lions to do one better and qualify for the finals. And they have a pretty solid group of players with international experience and a bunch of globe-trotting T20 freelancers who ply their trade in some of the most competitive T20 and T10 leagues of the cricketing world.
Former English opener Jason Roy, current English test team vice captain Ollie Pope, T20 specialist Laurie Evans, and young batting sensation Dan Lawrence are a few popular names that form the core of the batting group. They have two solid all-rounders of international quality in Tom Curran and Sean Abbott.
On the bowling front, Englishman Gus Atkinson, and Aussies Spencer Johnson and Daniel Worrall will be spearheading the pace attack while Cameron Steel could slot in as the sole spinner in the attack.
Overall, the depth in their bowling and batting groups and the balance in the squad appears to be brilliant this season, and it won't be a surprise if they go deep in the tournament.

The pitches at Cardiff were excellent to bat on last season, with teams notching three 200+ and four 180+ scores. It could turn out to be another high scoring contest if the surface plays true to its billing. With no major threat of a downpour, the forecast looks great for an exciting T20 clash.

This match will be held at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Last time these two teams met here, Surrey posted 236 batting first and restricted Glamorgan to 171 to complete a whopping 65 run victory. Following that drubbing, Glamorgan managed to win just one out of five games here in that season.
Five of the seven games at this venue last year were won by the team batting first, so don’t be surprised if the team winning the coin toss opts to have a bat first.
Surrey, all the way. Man for man, they’re a much better team on paper in of experience and skill. Glamorgan will find it hard to compete against Surrey if just a few of their players find form and play to potential.
We are backing Surrey as winners of this contest.
