The first Test at Chennai showed why it is difficult to beat India in India. It was a confidence-breaking loss for Bangladesh. They will hope to make amends in the second Test against India at Kanpur on 27th September 2024, starting at 9:30 am.
India’s long-awaited return to Test cricket ended in a favourable and usual result at home - a win by a huge margin of 280 runs. While Ashwin and Jadeja flourished with all-round performances, Rishabh Pant’s century was the icing on the cake. Bangladesh have answers to find, especially in their batting. It lacked the Test batting application, to say it mildly. Can they come back in the second Test to put up a fight against the mighty Indians?
When India lost a few quick wickets in the first session of the first Test at Chennai in the helping conditions, it seemed like the break was too long after all. Jaiswal put up a fighting half-century - 6th in a row for him - but the rest of the batting lineup crumbled around him. At 144 for 6, it seemed like Bangladesh may have an opening.
However, if there ever was, it proved to be a short-lived chance. Jadeja and Ashwin rebuilt the innings for the rest of the day as only the two top-ranked Test all-rounders can. Jadeja was cautious in the beginning, with Ashwin proving the aggressive touch. They ended up adding 199 runs in the end. The game was practically over for Bangladesh by then. India ended the innings on 376. Ashwin completed yet another century (113 runs) down the order.
In defence, India’s pace attack led by Bumrah was all over Bangladesh. In the process, Bumrah became the bowler with the second-best average in Test history (min 150+ wickets). Bangladesh folded for 149 in the first innings. India then did some batting practice to allow some break to the bowlers instead of enforcing the follow-on.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant scored centuries in the second innings to set a massive target of 515 runs. Bangladesh were never going to get there. Ashwin 6-fer made sure the games ended in the first session on the 4th day. Given Kanpur's black soil pitch, India will likely go with three spinners. Another spin fest is awaited. India’s only worry right now is Rohit and Virat's form. Regardless of that, nothing suggests that they will lose the second Test at Kanpur.

Bangladesh must have been pretty happy to win the toss in the first Test and to ask India to bat first in the cloudy conditions in Chennai. Hasan Mahmud did not disappoint. He ran through India’s top order to pick up 4 of the first 5 wickets. Three on them in the first session. It involved the wickets of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Nahid Hasan eventually got Jaiswal out to reduce India to 144 for 5. KL Rahul fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the next over. India were 144 for 6 and looked a little concerned. Bangladesh needed to seize this opportunity and get India all out under 200. It was their bad luck that India’s remaining batting lineup had two of the best all-rounders in the world. They ended up conceding 376.
In response, Bangladesh batters were all at sea against Bumrah and co. Bangladesh scored 149. Shakib al Hasan top scored with 32. He was out to reverse sweeping to Ravindra Jadeja—an unnecessary shot, given the circumstances. It was a scene that was repeated in the rest of the Test where many Bangladesh batters seemed to manufacture shots when all they needed was to just stay at the crease.
To Bangladesh’s credit, they did start the chase of 515 in a confident fashion. Zakir Hasan, Shan Islam and Nijmul Shanto all had starts. Shanto went on to score 82. The rest of the batting lineup had no answers to Ashwin’s mastery. Bangladesh need to apply themselves in the batting. They have a good bowling unit. Nobody expects them to win in India. It would do Test cricket a world of good, if they put up a decent fight.

The weather on the match day on 27th September at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur is likely to be rainy, especially in the morning session. There’s a 92% chance of rain on the match day. The temperature would range between 31°C to 22°C. Hopefully, the rest of the days will have better weather for a cricket match.
The match will be held at Green Park, Kanpur, one of the oldest pre-independence venues in India. It was established in 1945 and has hosted numerous domestic and international matches since then. It hosted a Test in a historic series against England in 1952. It has a seating capacity of 32,000 spectators.
There have been a total of 23 Tests at Green Park so far. Out of the 10 outright results, the teams batting first after winning the toss have won 7 matches (70% win rate). The black soil pitch is expected to assist spinners in the later stages of the game. The team winning the toss should bat first here.
India have been unbeatable at home - 35 wins and 4 losses in the last 45 Tests at home. Bangladesh did fight in the first innings of the first Test, but they eventually crumbled to a huge loss. Spinners will play a major role in Kanpur's black soil pitch. Unarguably, India have a better spin attack in Ashwin, Jadeja and probably Axar. It’s hard see any other result here than India winning the second Test and the series along with it.
