It’s time. The greatest cricket rivalry is finally here as India takes on arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14. Billions of fans all over the world have been excitedly waiting for this mouth-watering clash for months, and it’s finally here. Both India and Pakistan have looked really good in the World Cup so far, winning both of their matches. India are currently in second place on the table with a net run rate of 1.500, while Pakistan are once place below them with 0.927. India has a spotless record against their rivals in ODI World Cups. Will they be able to maintain it? Or will Pakistan finally their first ODI World Cup win against India? We shall know soon.

India are coming into this game on the back of a comprehensive win against Afghanistan. They restricted Afghanistan to 272-8 on a great batting wicket at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and made a mockery of the chase by polishing off the target in just 35 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Captain Rohit Sharma led from the front with a sublime 131 off just 84 balls. This was his seventh ODI World Cup century—the most by any player in history.
Rohit has a terrific record against Pakistan in 50-over cricket: 787 runs in 18 matches at an average of nearly 50 with 2 hundreds and 7 fifties.
Another player who has always done well against Pakistan is in-form batter Virat Kohli. He has amassed 662 runs against them in 15 ODIs at an average of 55 with 3 hundreds and 2 fifties. Kohli also has scores of 85 and 55 not out from the first two games of this World Cup. He will definitely be the main thorn for Pakistan’s bowling attack.
In the absence of Shubman Gill, who is still recovering from dengue, the onus will be a little more on India’s middle order. This is where they have the cushion of KL Rahul. Ever since his return from injury earlier last month, India’s wicket-keeper batter has been in incredible touch, collecting 402 runs in 7 innings at an average of 100.50 with 3 fifties and one hundred. That one century, incidentally, came against Pakistan in the Asia Cup last month. Rahul was also the Player of the Match in India’s opening game against Australia this Sunday, where he smashed a sublime unbeaten 97 in a tricky chase of 200 when India was 2-3 at one point.
India also have a strong bowling unit to back up their robust batting. Leading the pack is Jasprit Bumrah, who has been excellent since his return to international cricket in August. He was the wrecker-in-chief in the previous game against Afghanistan, ending with figures of 4-39 from 10 overs on a flat surface. His opening burst will be vital for India. We expect him to take a couple of top-order wickets in the powerplay.
Kuldeep Yadav (14 wickets from the last 7 matches) is another bowler Pakistan will be wary of. The last time these sides met, Kuldeep ended up ripping through the Pakistani batting unit with a five-wicket haul. Although the wicket here will be much better for batting, Kuldeep has the knack of taking wickets in the middle overs.

Pakistan will be flying high on confidence after their last match. They pulled off an ODI World Cup-record run chase of 345 to beat Sri Lanka in Hyderabad and make it two wins from two to start the tournament. Mohammad Rizwan (131 *) and Abdullah Shafique (113) starred with the bat for Pakistan and showed that this Pakistan team can win games even when star batter Babar Azam isn’t performing.
Shafique was playing his first World Cup game, and his performance has ensured that Pakistan now has a reliable opener for the rest of the tournament. Rizwan, meanwhile, has been the go-to batter for Pakistan in such tense situations. He has now smashed 484 runs in the last 10 matches at a stunning average of 80.67.
Babar has had a quiet World Cup so far, but you cannot rule him out. He is still Pakistan’s best batter and has 335 runs in his last 10 matches at an average of 37.22. The pitch in Ahmedabad will be flat, which will allow him to get a big score under his belt.
Iftikhar Ahmed is another batsman India needs to watch out for. He can do some big damage down the order and we are expecting him a quickfire cameo from him in this match.
Pakistan’s bowling attack is always potent, but they will be disappointed at the way they gave away runs in the first 30-odd overs of the match against Sri Lanka. Having said that, they restricted the Lankans brilliantly in the last 10 overs, ensuring the target never went beyond out of reach.
The fast bowling duo of Shaheen Shah Afridi (18 wickets in the last 10 matches) and Haris Rauf (19 wickets in the last 8 matches) will be the main threat for the Indian batters. Hasan Ali, who has replaced Naseem Shah in the squad, has done a fine job as well, and picked up four wickets in the previous game.
The lack of quality spinners in the attack might end up hurting Pakistan badly in this match. Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Iftikhar Ahmed haven’t really threatened the opposition, and it’s unlikely they will create any serious pressure on India’s in-form batters.

The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is great for batting but has something in it for the bowlers, particularly spinners. Fast bowlers will have to be on the money or they will be spanked once batters get their eye in. Spinners will get some help from the wicket when the sun is beating down on it. By the second half, however, batting tends to become easier as dew sets in. Batters can also hit through the line here once they have settled down.
The weather department has predicted clear skies for the day. The weather will be warm throughout.
The average score batting first at Ahmedabad is 243. However, this should definitely be a high-scoring contest. The highest total posted at this venue is 365-2 by South Africa against India in 2010. The team batting first will look to set a target of around 280-300 runs at least.
The last match played here – between Australia and New Zealand – was won comfortably by the Kiwis by 9 wickets. Since the wicket tends to get better here in the second half under lights, we reckon the toss-winning captain will choose to bowl first.
India have a 7-0 head-to-head record against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup. Moreover, they have remained undefeated against them in the last five ODIs. But Pakistan is coming into this game with renewed confidence and will be confident of their chances. India will have a slight edge as they are the home team and have been in tremendous form over the last few weeks. Their batting, despite missing Gill, is very strong, and their bowling has plenty of wicket-taking options. We reckon the game will be decided by who bowls better. Both teams have strong batting units and are expected to do well on this surface. However, India’s bowling attack looks to have more potency for these conditions, and their strong spin bowling might make the difference here. Pakistan have terrific seamers in their ranks, but the lack of threat from their spinners might let them down. This is a hard game to call, but we think India will prevail.
Back India as the winners of this high-octane clash.
