It’s a clash between two heavyweights at Abu Dhabi today. These teams have gone head-to-head twice, with the honours shared at 1-1. But Samp Army’s loss in particular would be more hurting because it came at the wrong time in the second qualifier last year. A genuine chance to oust the Gladiators for a ticket to the final, and Samp Army squandered it. And the rest is history.
Besides an opportunity to get one up on the Gladiators, Samp Army men will be looking to assert their dominance and finish the group stages on a high. A fixture with Gladiators would be a great opportunity to test their skills and form, and it will give their campaign a shot in the arm should they come out winning. Deccan Gladiators play their last match of the league stage tomorrow and would look to pick up two points so they can finish at 10 and keep their hopes of a top 2 finish alive.

Morrisville Samp Army didn’t begin their campaign well, losing to Northern Warriors by 9 runs. But they’ve hardly put their foot wrong thereafter and went on to win four matches on the bounce fairly comfortably. But they knew they were in for a litmus test especially in the back end of the tournament with back to back matches against scheduled with last year’s finalists Deccan Gladiators and New York Strikers.
By the looks of it, they look ready to go. Their players understand their roles well and have been able to deliver solid performances consistently. They’ve not changed the makeup of the team much, and have gone to the same six bowlers at all times no matter whether they’re under the pump or bossing the contest.
All their batsmen are in decent nick and turn up to the crease ready to take on the opposition right from ball one. Karim Janat, Qais Ahmad, and Jason Holder are peaking at the right time, while Faf Du Plessis and Andrie Gous keep giving them a dominant start every time they take the field.

Deccan Gladiators have rarely sought favours from other teams to get ahead in the tournament, and they’d like to keep it that way going into this match vs Samp Army. With only one more game to go, the Gladiators are well placed for a top 4 finish. But they’ll be eyeing for a place in the top 2, and that means they cannot afford to drop the last game at all.
Their batters are in scintillating form, especially Englishman Tom Kohler-Core who has smashed 23 sixes himself so far in the tournament. His returns are almost twice that of six-hitting monster Nicky, who has had a modest season with just 12 maximums to his name. The arrival of the big-hitting David Wiese has supercharged them and they’re looking more ominous than ever.
Their bowlers looked half-decent for a few matches and have been belted on a couple of occasions, but with Thushara having the kind of impact he has had, they suddenly look a potent unit. Potent enough to back their strategy, which is very simple: win toss, put a boatload of runs on board, and restrict the opposition for much less. It has worked out 4 out of 6 times so far and they’ll be hoping their batters and bowlers have some success with the same strategy against Samp Army.

Conditions are going to be ideal for a high-scoring T10 clash between two heavyweights. Rain is expected to stay away. The pitch will assist bowlers like Thushara and Karim Janat who’ve plenty of deceptive balls in their bag of tricks.

Deccan Gladiators won’t have any second thoughts about batting first if they get lucky with the flip of the coin. They’ve had success putting runs on the board and restricting the chasing team for much less, and they’re more likely to fall back on that.
Samp Army has shown inclination to chase at all times, so it should be an exciting contest.
Facing a team like Deccan Gladiators at this point of the tournament is a great challenge for Samp Army and they’ll be up for it. But Gladiators are looking a far more complete side with a T20 veteran and a smart bowler included in the ranks. And we think they’ll have answers to whatever the Samp Army is likely to throw at them.
We are backing Deccan Gladiators as the winners of this contest.
