New Zealand seem to be the team to beat in this World Cup. They have won both of their matches convincingly so far and have taken the pole position at the table with a net run rate of 1.958. The Kiwis will next take on Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. They have a spotless record against Bangladesh in ODI World Cups and will be pretty confident of their chances. However, we have seen that the Chennai pitch is conducive to spin bowling, and Bangladesh’s spinners might just end up choking New Zealand’s batters here.

New Zealand are functioning like a well-oiled machine right now. They have beaten England and Netherlands comprehensively and look all set to make it three in a row. What will give the Black Caps more confidence is that they recently beat Bangladesh 2-0 in an ODI series at their home.
Rachin Ravindra has become a star for the Kiwis in the World Cup. The spin-bowling all-rounder has been promoted to the No.3 spot and has delivered knocks of 123* and 51 versus England and Netherlands, respectively. His presence has strengthened the New Zealand batting unit considerably.
Devon Conway is our man to watch out for in this match. His spectacular unbeaten 152 against England in the first game of this World Cup was an absolute masterclass and showed how dangerous he can be. Conway is a fantastic player of spin bowling and his performance against Bangladesh’s spinners will be crucial here.
Keep an eye out for Daryl Mitchell as well. The middle-order batter averages 43.75 in ODIs this year and has already hit three hundreds.
On the bowling front, Mitchell Santner is likely to be the bowler who makes the difference on this pitch. The left-arm spinner has loads of experience and has also played plenty of games at Chennai in the IPL. The wicket will suit his style of bowling, and he, along with Rachin Ravindra, will make life difficult for the opposition batters.
Bangladesh will also need to watch out for Trent Boult’s opening burst. He has been among the wickets and can take down a few batters in his first spell.

Bangladesh are coming off a crushing 137-run loss against England, where they could manage just 227 while chasing a target of 365. That massive loss has pushed them to sixth place in the table and reduced their net rate to -0.653.
The Tigers, however, will relish this wicket. Their spin bowlers should find plenty of purchase here throughout and that will always keep them in the game. Shakib Al Hasan, with all his guile and experience, will definitely be the main bowler for Bangladesh on this surface. The world’s best all-rounder will also be required to prove his mettle with the bat at some stage on this difficult surface.
Mahedi Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz will both likely bowl ten overs each here. These are the surfaces they thrive on, and if they can maintain their lines and lengths, the Kiwi batters will find it really hard to get them away.
Another bowler who can make a difference here is Shoriful Islam (14 wickets in the last 7 matches). The left-arm pacer has been varying his lines nicely and bowling plenty of cutters. His role in the death might turn the game.
Bangladesh’s batting, however, has not looked in good shape. Aside from Shakib, the team will be counting on Najmul Hossain Shanto (328 runs from the last 5 matches) to deliver.
Litton Das, who scored a fantastic 76 off 66 balls, in the previous game, can also make an impact here. Then there is Mushfiqur Rahim, one of Bangladesh’s most successful batters. The wicket-keeper batter is fresh off a fine knock of 51 off 64 balls against England. He will be crucial for Bangladesh in this match.

The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium will be slow and conducive to spin bowling. Seamers will get some bounce and movement at the start, but once the ball becomes softer, they are likely to become ineffective. Batters will have to grind it out and show proper technique and patience to excel on this wicket. Spinners, though, will dominate. They will get consistent slow spin off the surface, and batters will find it tough to hit them through the line.
The weather in Chennai will be warm and humid.
The average score batting first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is 231. This is unlikely to be a high-scoring match. In the previous game, Australia, after batting first, could only manage 199 here against India. Their batters were throttled against India’s batters of spin bowlers. Both New Zealand and Bangladesh have skilled spinners in their ranks and will certainly make batting difficult. The team batting first should look to post a total of around 260-270.
In the previous game held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in this World Cup, India stuttered in their chase of 200 at the start, but eventually got their without much trouble. The team winning the toss here might just be tempted to chase. However, the searing heat and humidity might force them to bat first and try and put on a big total.
New Zealand have won all five matches they have played against Bangladesh in the ICC ODI World Cup. They've also won the last nine ODIs in a row against them. So, the Black Caps will certainly start as favorites for this clash, particularly given the form they are in right now. However, Bangladesh cannot be taken lightly. On their day, they can beat any big team. Furthermore, this pitch should be right up their alley and can keep them in the game. That said, New Zealand is overall a much better side and should be able to dominate this contest.
Back New Zealand as the winners of this clash.
