The ICC World Cup warm-up matches have started, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead. New Zealand ed a comprehensive win against Pakistan in their first warm-up fixture, while South Africa’s match against Afghanistan was washed out. The Proteas will now be eager to get a full match against New Zealand at Thiruvananthapuram on October 2. This is their final chance to get acclimatized to the conditions, and they would want to make full use of that opportunity.
New Zealand couldn’t have asked for a better start to their World Cup preparations. They made mincemeat of a target of 346 against Pakistan by winning with almost seven overs to spare. Rachin Ravindra, promoted up the order, unleashed numerous eye-catching strokes in his delightful 97-run knock off 72 balls. Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman also hit half-centuries to get ready in style for the World Cup.
What would mightily please the Kiwis, however, is the progress of Kane Williamson, who marked his return from a six-month injury layoff with a 49-ball fifty. Williamson looked composed and solid as usual, and he looks all set to leave his mark in the tournament.
With Williamson in form, this New Zealand side looks stronger. Their only issue so far is their bowling on flat surfaces, but the likes of Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson will get better as they get a few more games under their belt in these conditions. Trent Boult didn’t play the last match but is likely to get a few overs against South Africa.
James Neesham is their weak link with the ball, but Mitchell Santner is someone who could make all the difference. The left-arm spinner had figures of 2-39 from 8 overs in the previous game. He should do better against the Protea batters, who tend to struggle against quality spin bowling.

The ODI World Cup has always eluded South Africa, and they are determined to change that narrative this time around. Led by Temba Bavuma, their team is riding a wave of success, having recently triumphed over Australia on their home ground. The biggest challenge, however, would be for them to get used to the slower wickets here.
In of form, Bavuma stands out as the leading performer for South Africa. Over the course of 10 ODIs this year, the determined opener has notched up an impressive 637 runs, maintaining an exceptional average of nearly 80, including three centuries and two fifties.
With Quinton de Kock set to bid farewell to the ODI format following the World Cup, spectators can anticipate a spectacular display of his batting prowess. His extensive IPL experience on similar pitches is likely to work in his favor, setting the stage for an impressive tournament.
Keep a close watch on Heinrich Klaasen, who's been in red-hot form. The explosive middle-order batsman recently delivered a scintillating performance, smashing 174 runs from just 83 balls against Australia. His ability to dominate spin bowlers makes him a key player to watch out for, as he's likely to target New Zealand’s spin attack.
Leading the charge in the pace department will be Kagiso Rabada, ed by formidable talents like Lungi Ngidi and rising star Marco Jansen. The responsibility of spin duties will fall on the experienced shoulders of Keshav Maharaj. He has done well recently, and the pitches here should suit him more than the ones he finds back home.

The Greenfield International Stadium pitch offers favorable conditions for batting, providing substantial assistance to spinners. Seamers, initially, can exploit some movement off the wicket, but as the innings progresses, batters will find the going easier. As the match progresses, the pitch tends to become slower, yet a batsman who has spent time at the crease can go on the offensive against spinners.
The weather in Thiruvananthapuram will be mostly cloudy during the day. There will be a couple of morning showers and a thunderstorm, followed by heavy showers in the afternoon.
The Greenfield International Stadium has only hosted two One-Day Internationals (ODIs), the most recent of which took place earlier this year between India and Sri Lanka in January. India won the match by 317 runs after scoring 390-5 in their first innings. The team batting first should aim for a total of about 280-300 runs. Given the batting strength of both sides, we might even see a total of over 340 odd runs being amassed here.
Heavy showers are expected in the afternoon. So the team winning the toss might be tempted to field first.
While this is a warm-up game, a win will be a nice way to boost the team’s confidence. Both teams have plenty of depth in their batting, but it’s their bowling that might be tested in these conditions. South Africa, in particular, would like to give at least a few overs to all their bowlers. The Kiwis would like to see how Trent Boult shapes up. Given the form New Zealand has shown, we expect them to dominate this contest. However, South Africa’s batters too will make a statement here.
We are backing New Zealand as the winners of this warm-up match.
