The start of any Test series is always an exciting one and there will be plenty of eyes on this game across the globe particularly as England won the series 3-0 the last time they were here. And when you throw in Pakistan's poor recent home record, there is plenty for their coach, Australian Jason Gillespie, to sort out.
Even without their captain Ben Stokes, England will continue with their ultra-aggressive approach which has generally served them well since the BazBall era began in late spring 2022.
Both teams need a win not only to get the series going in the right direction but also for their World Test Championship ambitions as Pakistan are in eighth and England in fourth.

This Pakistan side has more talent than many other Test teams on the circuit at the moment but they have been unable to bring it together in a Test at home since February 2021!
Babar Azam has not been at his usual high standards in this format but has the quality to turn it back on again and with Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood in the top three, runs should not be a struggle. Equally, Saud Shakeel averages 56.30 from his 23 Test innings and Pakistan need to post big in their first innings.
With the ball, the pace will come from Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, both capable of bowling at a very high pace. Abrar Ahmed will lead the spin attack and he caused England plenty of problems in 2022.

After arriving in Pakistan for this Test series in 2022 with limited expectations which they were able to easily outdo, England arrive for this series two years later with expectations a lot higher. However, the truth is that they are not at full strength with either the bat, the ball or in their leadership!
There is good news for the tourists as opener Zak Crawley returns to the side after missing the Sri Lanka home series due to a broken finger. Whether he is fully recovered is questionable but England will be pleased to have Crawley back alongside Ben Duckett at the top of the order. Plenty will rest on Joe Root who has been in brilliant form but, with Jamie Smith at six with Chris Woakes at seven, the tail does look a little long.
Captain Ollie Pope will have the services of left-arm spinner Jack Leach for the first time since the first Test in India earlier this year and his partnership with Shoaib Bashir will be crucial.

The forecast is for exceptionally hot conditions throughout this Test with day one, Monday, being the hottest of the lot! The temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees towards the end of the day which could mean some very tired bowlers and fielders. No rain is forecast from day one to day five in this Test.
The last Test at this venue saw plenty of turn for the spinners throughout the game but we expect a little bit more for the pacers to work with in this match. This will not be the quickest pitch ever seen in Pakistan for a Test and we expect a par first innings total to be no more than 310.
With such hot conditions forecast on day one, we expect this to be an easy decision for both captains at the toss. The pitch will surely disintegrate across the five days with the temperature so hot and we predict both skippers to choose to bat first.
Although it is England who come into this series in much the better form in this series, they are far from full strength ahead of this opener. However, we still expect them to have enough quality to emerge with the victory in Multan.
