Afghanistan and South Africa will clash in the second warm-up match of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.
Back South Africa to win this warm-up match.
Tournament: | ICC Cricket World Cup Warm Up Matches, 2023 |
Format: | oneday |
Venue: | Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, India |
Toss Prediction: | To Bowl |
In the lead-up to the ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to begin shortly, the ten participating teams are slated to play two warm-up matches each at three separate Indian venues from September 29 to October 3. South Africa will take on Afghanistan at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram in September to kick off their World Cup preparations. While the result of the match won’t make any difference, both teams will be keen to get some much-needed practice in these conditions before the main tournament begins.
South Africa are still searching for their maiden ODI World Cup title and will be hoping this will be their time. Temba Bavuma will lead an in-form bunch who has just beaten Australia at home. However, it won’t be easy to replicate that form in Indian conditions right away.
Bavuma has been the in-form player for South Africa. In 10 ODIs this year, the gutsy opener has scored 637 runs at an average of almost 80 with three centuries and two fifties.
This will be Quinton de Kock’s final ODI World Cup as he has announced his retirement from the format after the end of the tournament. Therefore, we can expect some fireworks from the explosive opener. De Kock has a lot of experience playing on these pitches, courtesy of the IPL, and is likely to do well here.
Another batter to watch out for is Heinrich Klaasen. The dashing middle-order batter has been in a murderous mood and is coming off a rampaging knock of 174 off just 83 balls against Australia recently. Klaasen is one of the few South African batters who can really punish spinners, and you can be sure he will target Afghanistan’s spinners in the second half of the innings.
The pace attack will be spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and includes the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen. Keshav Maharaj is likely to be the team’s go-to spin bowler in the tournament.

Afghanistan aren’t coming into this World Cup with the best of momentum. They were blanked 0-3 against Pakistan in August and couldn’t make it to the Super 4 stage in the Asia Cup a few days later. However, they are still a spirited bunch that can surprise any team on their day.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz will be their main batsman to watch out for. He has smashed two big hundreds this year, including a career-best 151 versus Pakistan at Hambantota. If he gets going, Afghanistan will be assured of a solid start.
Mohammad Nabi has all the experience of playing in these conditions and will be the team’s most valuable player. As a batter, we expect him to blast some useful runs down the order. His off-breaks, too, will be more than handy in the middle overs.
The South African batters will need to be watchful of star leg-spinner Rashid Khan. Rashid has been the team’s main wicket-taker for years now and knows these conditions like the back of his hand. The Protea batters don’t have much experience facing his legbreaks and will find it challenging to face him.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman is another bowler who can make a big difference for Afghanistan. The off-spinner bowls tight lines and lengths and even bowls in the powerplay. We reckon he will take a couple of wickets up front.

The pitch at the Greenfield International Stadium is a good one for batting, with plenty of help for the spinners. At the start of the innings, seamers will get some movement off the wicket. However, once batters settle down a little, they will be able to play their strokes. The pitch tends to slow down by the second half, but if there is one batter who has been there for a while, he can attack the spinners.
The weather in Thiruvananthapuram will be cloudy with showers and thunderstorms. So the match is likely to be frequently interrupted.
There have just been two ODIs played in the Greenfield International Stadium, the last of which was played earlier this year between India and Sri Lanka. India posted 390-5 after batting first and went on to win the match by 317 runs. The team batting first here should look to set a total of around 280-300 runs.
The weather is expected to be cloudy and rainy. So the team winning the toss might be tempted to field first.
South Africa on paper are a much stronger side than Afghanistan. There is no doubt that Afghanistan have improved a lot over the years, but they still have a long way to go. We expect them to put up a solid bowling performance, but the inexperience in their batting is likely to let them down against good sides like South Africa. The Proteas will enjoy batting on this surface. It will, however be interesting to see how their bowlers fare here.
Back South Africa to win this warm-up match.
