Table-toppers Surrey take on Glamorgan in this exciting weekend clash in the Vitality T20 Blast. Surrey have been beaten only once in the competition so far when Sussex’s 213 at the Oval proved too much for the Surrey batsmen to chase down in the end. Other than that, their campaign has been spotless. With five wins and a tie, they’re at 11 points from 7 games, slightly ahead of Somerset and Sussex. Glamorgan, on the other hand, with 2 wins, 4 losses and a no result from their 7 games so far, have been mediocre at best. Only one win came off their last five games, pushing them further down to the bottom of the points table. With their qualification chances in jeopardy, they are now having to face Surrey who have dominated them like no team has, claiming four wins of the recent five meetings.

Surrey are in fine form, with both bat and ball. A clear indication of their dominance this season is in the victory margins they’ve achieved over oppositions: 3 wins with over 50 runs difference against teams like Middlesex, Sussex and Somerset. Their last two away fixtures against Glamorgan and Hampshire resulted in wins, as well. They may not have been as clinical, but they still collected four points to solidify their grip at the top of the points table. Jamie Smith (285 runs from 7 games), Ollie Pope (205 runs from 7 games) and Laurie Evans (165 runs from 7 games) are looking solid with the bat, but their batting department still needs players like Jason Roy, Dan Lawrence and Dom Sibley to work up some form before the knockout stages. From a bowling perspective, Spencer Johnson’s indifferent form is a bit of a concern, but Tom Curran (14 wickets from 7 games) and Sean Abbott (12 wickets from 7 games) have kept the wickets coming especially through the middle stages.

Glamorgan’s ordinary campaign so far in the competition has yielded just two wins. They need to string together a few wins on the bounce to be able to work their way up the table into the second half or else they’ll be out of contention sooner or later considering their NRR (-0.84) is the second worst among all teams. Returns of Kiran Carlson and Marnus Labuschagne have been far from satisfactory, but Sam Northeast, Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke have kept Glamorgan’s batting going with some consistent performances in the competition so far. Their squad lacks hard-hitting batsmen who could clear the ropes at will and that has hurt them a bit. Mason Crane, Tim van der Gugten and Dan Douthwaite have been pretty good with their spells, but there’s nothing more to remark on the bowling unit. Jamie Mcilroy has been pretty ordinary and the absence of a proper fifth bowler hasn’t helped them in restricting oppositions to a par or less than par score.

The pitches at the Oval have favoured batsmen who like to play their strokes. The 200 mark has been breached once, and several teams have made more than 170 using the good batting conditions on offer. The forecast for this game is not looking bad, and with a bit of a cloud cover bowlers can get some assistance out of the pitch as well.

The match is going to be played at the Kennington Oval cricket ground in London, where Surrey have shown complete dominance over Glamorgan in recent times.
Given that the teams batting first have been able to defend scores well of late and win games here this season, the team winning toss will surely fancy their chances batting first at this venue.
Surrey is in some serious form, and have all the ammunition in the bowling and batting department to dominate proceedings against Glamorgan. We reckon Surrey will win this contest hands-down.
