We are halfway thru the group stage in Group A, and India and United States of America are leading the pack. Yes, that’s a bit strange seeing Pakistan are also in the mix. But these teams are undefeated so far, and come into this match after defeating Pakistan in two thrilling finishes.
India’s poor performance with the bat against Pakistan is as much a surprise as United States of India’s inspiring showing with both bat and ball that saw them first tie the match, push the contest into a super over and eventually take the win against Pakistan. Upsetting Pakistan has pushed United States to the brink of qualification, with the other three contenders poor display in the tournament.
USA men will be keen on repeating their spirited performance on their first meeting with the giant Indian team in the international arena. For India, though, a win against USA guarantees them a place in the Super Eights and that’s where their focus will be at.

USA chased down 190+ against all odds to beat Canada in their first match, but they took things one notch higher and sured everyone’s expectations when they became giant-killers that defeated Pakistan in their next.
Their underdog spirit shined through in that match and helped them tie the regulation 20 overs contest and push things into a super over. But their strategic smarts and common-sensical approach to getting to a competitive total in the super over helped them pip Pakistan aside. Currently, they are sitting pretty on the second spot on the points table over higher-ranked teams like Pakistan, Ireland.
And, with two games remaining, the USA will be determined to make it out of the group stages into the super eights. A defeat against India will set them back but a victory over Ireland in their last group stage encounter could confirm their place in the next round. The batting group has been competitive, with Aaron Jones in particular making valuable contributions performer in both games.
His heroics with the bat, after an immensely helpful 68 run partnership between Monank Patel and Andries Gous, was the difference between a loss and a tie. And they took the tie and came out with a positive frame of mind in the super over to score close to 20 runs, which was beyond Pakistan’s reach ultimately. Also in fine form are bowlers Nosthush Kenjige and Saurabh Netravalkar picked up wickets at regular intervals and put a lid on Pakistani batsmen scoring quickly.

India breezed past Ireland to complete a quick victory in their first match, but their second match against Pakistan was a scratchy affair.
Batting first, India’s top order failed to give the team a solid start but Rishabh Pant, back in India colors almost a year and half played another fine innings to take India to a respectable total. Axar Patel also played his part in getting India to 119, but the rest of the attack lost their plot and found scoring runs against Pakistani pacers difficult.
119 was never going to be enough even on an up-and-down New York wicket, but Indian pacers showed their wares, especially Jasprit Bumrah who picked three wickets and slipped in a few tidy overs in the middle phase to put the target beyond Pakistan’s reach. Going into this contest against USA, India will want to be at its absolute best. They know they cannot afford to take the USA men lightly, after what the co-hosts did to Pakistan the other day.
But, India, as a team, needs to perform better. And it starts with Kohli scoring more runs up top. Rohit Sharma, who was dismissed cheaply in the second game against Pakistan, had a good hit against Ireland. However, Shivam Dube and Suryakumar Yadav look a little out-of-touch especially on a wicket where runs have been hard to come by.
Another failure with the bat might make things a little difficult for them with the likes of Sanju Samson warming the bench.
Bowling-wise, the Indian attack is doing well. They kept Ireland to a meagre score and bowled well collectively to defend a score as low as 119 against Pakistan.

Scores like 77,96, 137/7, 103/9, 119, 113/6 in the games completed indicate the New York surface has been far from perfect. But the low-scoring games here have been too close to call and that’s a good thing. Expect the pitch to behave in a similar manner, so scores in excess of 140-150 should be above par. Conditions are supposed to be a warm and cloudy for most part of the match, and there’s no rain threat.

This match will be played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. This is the first time the local team USA will get to play in this newly put-together cricketing venue.
Teams have not had much success batting first on this New York wicket. On the other hand, chasing teams have thrown away opportunities to close out games from commanding positions. Both teams will be hoping to take stock of the pitch and conditions, and then chase. Don’t be surprised if the captain winning the toss decides to bat second.
USA are buoyant after a series win against Bangladesh and two back to back victories against Canada and Pakistan to open their campaign in this T20 world cup. They'll be hell-bent on putting on a show against a powerhouse of a cricketing nation that India is. But we think India would win this contest without any trouble.
