We are at the business end of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One as Western Province lock horns with North West in the Final.
Bowlers have been the match-winners who’ve made the biggest impact for both teams. North West bowled out Warriors for just 94 runs in their last ODI after opting to bowl first.
Western Province were also exceptional with the ball in their last game against Boland where they picked up the last 7 wickets for just 102 runs. The match will be played at Newlands in Cape Town which will be exciting from a bowling perspective.
It is a bowling-friendly pitch in Newlands where pacers in particular have enjoyed a lot of help from the surface. Western Province have won 4 of their last 5 head-to-head matches against North West since 2019.
Though statistically, they’ve got the upper hand, North West will be backing themselves to carry their momentum and form and put the unbeaten WP on the backfoot early in the game.

The unbeaten table-toppers have cruised to the Final and will be confident of starting with an edge over the opposition. They’ve got the stats on their side along with an in-form bowling attack.
On a bowling-friendly pitch, the toss becomes crucial and even if WP are put to bat first on losing the toss, they’ve got what it takes to defend low totals too. Mihlali Mpongwana, Dane Paterson, and Nandre Burger will be the key bowlers to watch out for in this lineup.
These three have been consistent with both economy and wickets. Beuran Hendricks was replaced by Abdullah Bayoumy in the last match and the latter picked up 4 for 54 bowling first against Boland.
In the batting lineup, Bayoumy played at number 6 in place of George Linde who is more reliable in the lower-middle order. We reckon for the Final, Western Province would go back to Linde and Hendricks.
This would also add variety to the bowling attack along with strengthening the lower order. The key players in the batting lineup will be opener Tony de Zorzi and the middle-order batters David Bedingham and skipper Kyle Verreynne.
Zorzi’s opening partner Jonathan Bird is struggling to score runs and has failed to convert this starts. A lot depends on the Bedingham and Verreynee in the middle-order while Linde can play the finisher’s role at number 6.

After losing the first two consecutive matches, North West bounced back well enough to reach the Final. They’ve won 4 of their 5 ODIs since then. Kerwin Mungroo and Miguel Pretorius are among the key wicket-taking bowlers in this lineup.
Others like Duan Jansen and Senuran Muthusamy have also been promising with the ball and played a key role in the team’s recent wins. There is variety in this bowling attack and even if one of their key bowlers goes for runs, there is someone or the other to make up for it.
Muthusamy is also a key player in the batting lineup at number 5. He hasn’t played any big knocks lately but holds a key position in the batting order. Skipper Wihaan Lubbe at number 4 will be expecting the all-rounder to build partnerships along with him in the middle.
Given the pitch assists pacers, we reckon the role of these two along with other lower-order batters like Ruan de Swardt and Miguel Pretorius becomes crucial.
Both openers and number 3 batsman Raynard van Tonder have been among the top run-scorers for North West. But there hasn’t been consistency in the performances of this lineup.
We reckon they would struggle to chase anything over 260 runs against Western Province.

The pitch is quite bowling-friendly and has assisted the pacers on many occasions in the past. It will get even more difficult to score runs as the match progresses, and having runs on the board will be the right strategy going into this match. The weather will be cloudy with a high of 18 degrees Celsius in Cape Town.
Newlands in Cape Town will be the venue for the Final of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One 2023. There have been some high-scoring matches here in the past with South Africa holding the record for the highest score of 367 runs at this venue. However, the bowlers have had the upper hand for most of the games and we reckon a 265+ score will be a match-winning total at this venue.
Teams batting first have won more ODIs on this ground and with an in-form bowling attack, both teams will be confident enough to defend a total. It will not be easy to chase down anything over 260 on this surface.
Two in-form teams will lock horns in the Final with one of them having a clear edge in of past records and consistency. Nevertheless, considering the bowling pitch at the venue and the bowling form of both sides, we expect a close encounter between the two teams. Western Province, however, will have a slight edge going into this contest and start as favorites in our match prediction.
