Western Province go head to head against Warriors in the CSA T20 Challenge, as the tournament moves into the fag end of the second week.
Western Province have managed one win from three matches, with one of their fixtures getting washed out. Warriors kicked off their campaign with a comfortable victory but have slumped to back to back defeats.
Although Warriors walked away with a win in two of their most recent meetings, they are not in great form at the moment. And that gives Western Province a real opportunity to put Warriors under the pump. Western Province’s last win against Warriors came in 2022 when they eased home to a 7-wicket win with over 17 balls to spare.
Their players will be looking at putting in a similar performance to pick up a win and advance towards the top of the table.

Western Province finished fifth last season, missing out on the playoff spots. They started off the previous season with a bang, winning three in a row. However, a dip in form hindered their progress and their campaign lost all the early momentum.
By the end of the league stages, they lost more matches than they won. They had to wait for three matches to pick up their first victory of this season.
Their first match this season got rained out, and North West closed out a thrilling game in the last over to deny Western Province a chance at victory. Edward Moore (88 and 38) in his two innings so far has looked quite comfortable at the crease.
His partner David Bedingham hasn’t been able to post a double-digit score in the competition yet. His returns, 8 off 11 balls in two innings, doesn’t inspire much confidence at the top. Mihlali Mpongwana has chipped in with some useful runs in the middle order and demonstrated fine hitting towards the end. It’s important that the rest of the batting attack return to form quickly.
With the ball, captain Beuran Hendricks is looking a touch out of sorts. He has sent down 8 overs but hasn’t picked up any wicket yet. Wesley Bedja and Mihlali Mpongwana with two wickets apiece in both the matches have been impressive with their line and length. George Linde’s spin has bowled economically and picked up wickets, helping his team keep the opposition batting down to a par total.

Warriors, who finished the league stage last season at #3 on the points table, have stuttered in the beginning of this campaign. Not surprising given they lost the last five matches to close out the previous season, including the 2nd semi-final against Dolphins at Durban. They opened this year’s campaign with a hard-fought victory against Dolphins.
They were looking to break free from the rut and string together a few victories to get momentum on their side. It’s not difficult for a team that won 8 matches on the bounce last year, but they were smashed by Lions in the second encounter. A 16-run loss against Knights added to their misery, and they’re now staring down the barrel a bit.
Not one bowler in their outfit has had a great run so far. The overall form has been up and down, even though a few players like Beyers Swanepoel, Christopher King have done really well in two of the three matches. Three of them have leaked more than 52 runs in their spells in a couple of matches, and that’s not a good sign at all.
Their batsmen have found it hard chasing scores like 240 and 167. Jean du Plessis, Matthew Breezke, Jordan Hermann along with Patrick Kruger have at different instances shown great form to score some quick runs.

The pitch here is not the easiest to bat on, but batsmen, who see off the early threat from the moving ball and set a foundation through the middle overs, tend to cash in their chips at the death. Bowlers, who adjust to the pace and bounce of the wicket and bend their backs, get more purchase from the strip. The forecast for the match is clear and we are in for a full game should it hold.
This match will be played at the Newlands stadium in Cape Town, South Africa. Western Province has won five out of their six matches in the last five years here, and that’s a healthy track record.
The chasing team went on to win the last two matches to have produced a result here. Both these teams generally like to chase against each other, so we’re guessing that the captain winning the toss is most likely to put the opposition in to have a bat first.
Western Province seem to have struck the right balance in their starting XI in of youth and experience, and they have a bit of momentum going their way, as well. Western Province, to win.
We are backing Western Province as winners of this contest.
