Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets
Fresh from a T20 series win, confident Sri Lankans take on slightly off-color Bangladesh in the first of the three-match ODI series at Chattogram.
We are backing Sri Lanka as winners of this contest.

Between 2019 and now, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh met each other ten times in the ODI format, of which SL won six and Bangladesh three. Of their three meetings in 2023, Sri Lanka won two and lost their most recent encounter in Delhi, which will be ed for a long time. Obviously, for the wrong reasons.
A new mode of dismissal made its way into the books, when Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpires that incoming batsman Angelo Matthews had to be timed out for wasting time. Eventually, he was given out, and that caused a fair bit of controversy. There was palpable tension in the air during the rest of match, and, four months on, we saw traces of it even in the T20I series which concluded recently.
The triumphant Sri Lankans posed for the pictures pointing to their wrist, a gesture suggesting that the scars of the timed-out dismissal still remain fresh on their minds.

The disappointment of losing the T20 series will still be lingering fresh in the minds of the Bangladeshi cricketers, who have yet to win a series against Sri Lanka at home. But a victory in the ODI series will ease their disappointment a bit, however.
They have a good all-round squad to challenge SL at home, with nice depth and balance in both bowling and batting. In addition, the return of a few experienced campaigners namely Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim will serve as a big morale-booster, encouraging them to play a much bolder brand of cricket. About the team make-up, Sowmya Sarkar, Liton Das, Anamul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto comprise a solid top order which could cause serious damage if it gets going.
The solid middle order just got a tad stronger with the likes of Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the ranks. The bowling is in good hands with a versatile attack that has two left arm pacers, one right arm pacer, one leg spin bowler and one slow left arm orthodox to the right-hand-dominant SL batting order.
Litton Das (wk), Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman.

After clinching the T20 series 2-1, Sri Lanka now have their eyes firmly over the ODI trophy. The controversial time-out decision rubbed them the wrong way, intensifying the rivalry between the two teams.
In the decider, they put in a clinical performance with the bat in hand, and followed it up with a superb effort with the ball. They were hell-bent on making life difficult for the Bangladesh batsmen with some brilliant T20 bowling, and will be hoping to kick off the ODI leg of the tour with the same intensity.
There is no place in the squad for Angelo Mathews. Dasun Shanaka has failed to make the cut, as well. But the return of the skilled all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has changed the complexion of their line-up, giving it better balance and depth. Injury layoff has forced Matheesha Pathirana out of the series, but Sri Lanka have a great pool of fast bowlers to pick and choose from for any reinforcements. Dilshan Madhushanka, the pick of the SL bowlers in the ODI world cup last year, has made it to the squad and he’s likely to play a vital role with the new pill along with Pramod Madhushan.
Their experiment with Avishka Fernando as an opener has not worked out well, and they may want to reassess whether they should persist with him going forward. With Pathum Nissanka returning, their opening attack suddenly looks well-sorted.
Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (c) (wk), Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Sahan Arachchige/Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madhushanka, Pramod Madhushan.

The deck at this venue, of late, has not been a road per se, but there are runs to be had when batsmen apply their skills and build an innings. Even in the BPL 2024, which ended last month, the scores were a little all over the place. And in certain matches, the advantage moved towards the chasing team thanks to an early onset of dew. Weather-wise, everything looks great and we're likely to have a complete match without any rain interruption.
All three matches of this ODI Series will be played at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Bangladesh have played 28 matches here, of which they've won 17 and lost 11 -- which is a good track record.
It’s not easy to say with confidence that this is a win-toss, bat-second kind of surface. Several BPL teams decided chasing would bring them the right result and they were right 7 out of 11 times. We expect the team winning the toss to send in the opposition to have a bat first.
Even though Bangladesh punch above their weight at home, we guess Sri Lanka have got a proper, well-rounded XI to tackle any challenge that the hosts may throw at them.
We are backing Sri Lanka as winners of this contest.
