Canterbury square off against Central Districts in a key contest at Rangiora in the Ford Trophy.
A reprise of the 2023 final, this contest makes for exciting viewing, too, with a lot at stake for both teams, more so Central Stags. The 2022 champs had a shocker of a season last year, and haven’t begun this year particularly well, with just the odd win from 4 matches so far.
They’ll quickly need to find their way back into this competition, or else they’ll be found wanting as the tournament draws to a close. With the top three teams continuing to post wins on a consistent basis, they may have to narrow the gap before it starts widening. Canterbury, last year’s champions, began well with 2 wins but suffered a defeat in their last match so they’ll be hoping to bounce back quickly as well.
The two sides are all squared up on the recent head to head, with 2 wins each in their last five meetings.

Canterbury ran off to an easy victory against Wellington in the opener, and then backed it up with a resounding victory against Otago to hold on to their place at the top of the tree.
Their third match was rained off, and a week away from cricket took its toll on them, though. The rusty Kings were exposed in the next encounter against table-toppers Auckland.
Bundled out for 109 batting first in a rain-curtailed contest, they couldn’t come up with a spirited bowling performance needed to defend a low score against a good side. A 7-wicket drubbing did dent their NRR a touch, but they’re still sitting pretty in the second position.
Coming up against Central Districts, the Kings will be looking to get back to winning ways and keep up with the likes of Auckland and Wellington. Chad Bowes, bringing up the fastest List A double century with a whirlwind knock, holds the key with the bat.
With 253 runs of 3 innings at an average of 126.5 and a strike rate of 156.17, he tops the list of most runs this season with Zakary Foulkes with 76 off his 3 hits coming in at a distant second. The tall fast bowler has snared 6 wickets so far in the tournament, as well, cementing his spot in the team with a lovely display of all-round skills.
Angus McKenzie, who picked up 5 wickets in the opener against Wellington, hasn’t been able to quite replicate that performance but still remains a key cog in the wheel.

Central Districts have been on a slippery slope since their 22/23 Ford Trophy triumph in Napier, winning just 4 out of 14 games. For comparison, they had won 7 out of 11 matches on their way to becoming champions.
Their start to the current season was not ideal either, losing by 39 runs to Auckland at New Plymouth. Blair Tickner chipped in with 4 wickets with the ball, and Tom Bruce made a useful 73 with William Clark making a useful 45— although on a losing cause. Their bowling group had an ordinary day at office as they struggled to restrict the Northern Districts scoring runs at will. Tickner shined with a handy 3-wicket haul, but the rest of the attack was sent on a leather hunt.
Their batsmen, especially Brad Schmulian and Jack Boyle, came good with a huge 217 runs partnership for the second wicket that took them close to a tight victory.
Both of them went on to make centuries, however, they couldn’t quite get their team over the line. Rain played spoilsport in their next encounter against Wellington, but Curtis Heaphy worked up some form.
He continued where he left off and went on to make a huge hundred in the next match at Dunedin against Otago scoring, 142 of 145 balls to propel Central D to 330 for 7.
The Central Districts bowling group, defending a mammoth total, came up with the goods to blow away the Otago batsmen, sealing a 108-run victory in the end. They’ll be hoping to carry all the momentum from their previous game into their encounter against Canterbury.

Runs have been hard to come by at this venue of late. Teams have found scoring 250 to be a huge obstacle, with the mark being sured only once in four games. Batsmen need to cash in and make some runs when the ball is hard and new, as the pitch tends to slow down a touch as the match wears on. Taking runs off spinners in these tough conditions will be hard work for the batter coming in.
The short dimensions of the ground play into the batter’s hands, making life difficult for a bowler. But pacers have proven that it’s not hard to pick up wickets regularly if they stick to the basics and bowl well.
The forecast is clear on match day so the weather shouldn’t be a problem barring the cloudy conditions.
The match will be played at the Mainpower Oval, Rangiora in Canterbury. The hosts have done extremely well here, managing 5 wins from 6 games in the past few seasons.
Bowling first has been advantageous here in the recent past. Win toss, put the opposition in to have a bat, keep them down to a manageable score, and chase them down. The captains will have a similar ploy going into the coin toss on match day.
Canterbury are the form team and they have the right blend of aggression and control in the bowling and batting departments to take advantage of the home conditions where they’ve been utterly dominant of late. Canterbury to win.
