Otago Volts beat Canterbury Kings by 9 wickets

Otago, struggling for form, take on Canterbury who’ve a lot of room for improvement. Will Canterbury win and keep in touch with the leading pack? Or will Otago surprise?

  • Otago’s batting clearly lacks solidity, with most batsmen getting starts but failing to kick on to make a high score.
  • Jacob Duffy has picked up a bag of wickets from the five rounds so far, a lone bright spark in Otago’s poor campaign this season.
  • Canterbury has not lost to Otago since March’ 2020. In the five matches they played since, Canterbury won two and drew three games.

We are backing Canterbury as the winners of this contest.

In many ways, this contest between Canterbury and Otago is not a highly significant match given current table standings.

Canterbury-- lost 2, won 1 and drawn 2, are at the fifth place with 44 points-- 20 shy of the table-toppers Wellington, whereas Otago -- drawn 3 and lost 2—are yet to open their in this year’s edition. However, the outcome of the match will determine the fate of these two teams going forward. Although Otago is out of the running to finish at the top, Canterbury is hanging in there- but only just.

They have done well in the other formats this season namely Super Smash and the Ford cup, so they’ll target finishing their tournament in the upper half of the table. Otago’s main challenge would be to ensure they don’t slide further to become the wooden-spoon holders, with Auckland nipping at their heels closely.

Otago Volts Preview

Otago’s struggles in the Plunket shield continues, as they look to stave off a last place finish in the table. They’ve been poor this season with the bat, folding for 79 against Northern Districts.

Two of their highest totals came against Auckland, the bottom-ranked team as of writing. D Foxcroft is the only player to go past the three figures for Otago the whole season, and it’s saying something. Their batting has been pretty ordinary although many players in the team have averages over 25. Bowling is no different, with Jacob Duffy the only real, stand-out performer in the team, whose tally this season reads an impressive 23 wickets from 5 games.

Middling performances guarantee average results at best and there's no surprise why Otago are now languishing in the bottom of the table just a couple of points in front of Auckland. A turnaround is all they need to infuse some energy into their campaign but at the moment it looks like the players are just waiting for things to happen. Nobody in the team, whether it is batting or bowling, look like they could make things happen. And that has been the highlight of this miserable season for Otago in this year’s shield.

Otago Volts Predicted Playing XI:

Jacob Cumming, Thorn Parkes, Dale Phillips, Dean Foxcroft (c), Jamal Todd, Luke Georgeson, Max Chu (wk), Ben Lockrose, Travis Muller, Jacob Duffy, Jarrod McKay.

Canterbury Kings Preview

Two defeats to table-toppers Wellington have pushed Canterbury down to the middle of the table. Although a mid-table position gives them some sort of confidence going into their last few fixtures, they’ve a challenging path ahead on their quest to finish at the top.

With just 3 more matches to go before this year’s shield draws to a close, it seems like the door is definitely closing in on them. Wins against Otago and Auckland, , two bottom placed teams that have yet to win a game so far, will help them stay in touch of the leaders but their crucial fixture against second-placed Northern Districts will determine where they’ll wind up on the table at the end of the season. Batting-wise, Henry Nicholls, MJ Hay and CE McConchie have made significant contributions, consistently. They’ve been the backbone of their batting order which has otherwise been very ordinary this season.

On the bowling front, MD Rae and FW Sheat have been brilliant in their few appearances so far. With W Rourke and Kyle Jamieson missing matches for national duty, ZGF Foulkes, AW McKenzie and MKG Rippon have put their hand up to bolster the bowling stocks.

Canterbury Kings Predicted Playing XI:

Chad Bowes, Rhys Mariu, Ken McClure, Cole McConchie (c), Leo Carter, Mitch Hay (wk), Zakary Foulkes, Ish Sodhi, Angus McKenzie, Sean Davey, Ed Nuttall.

Weather Conditions

Batsmen relish playing on the decks here. The pitches here stay true for most part of the game and don’t crumble as much as the other venues in the country. And that’s a good sign for both teams, with their under-fire batting order. The forecast is mostly for partly sunny and pleasant weather, so rain stoppages won’t be a big concern.

OV vs CANT Pitch Report

This game will be played at the Molyneux Park, Alexandra, which is the home ground of team Otago. The home team has gone several years without winning a match here.

Toss: To Bat

Teams, upon winning toss here, prefer making the most of the batting-friendly conditions and putting a huge total on board. If the surface on offer is batting friendly, the team winning the toss will most likely bat first.

Otago has had a dismal season overall, and facing a top-class side like Canterbury in a venue where they haven’t won much is not going to be easy. Canterbury, all the way.

We are backing Canterbury as the winners of this contest.
