Match 25 of IPL 2025 sees Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chennai this Friday. CSK are having a torrid season so far, with just one win and four losses. KKR, last year’s champs, haven’t exactly had a smooth run either, sitting on two wins and three losses. Both sides head into this one after a defeat, and pressure is mounting. CSK will be banking on familiar conditions to pull off a much-needed win, but KKR have the tools to handle this surface and won’t go down without a fight.

CSK’s campaign has gone off the rails after a strong opening. Since that first win, they’ve stumbled through four losses in a row and now sit ninth on the table with a poor NRR of -0.889. Their latest defeat was a high-scoring affair against Punjab Kings, where they fell short by 18 runs despite posting 201-5 while chasing 220.
There was at least some rhythm with the bat—Devon Conway (69 off 49) and Rachin Ravindra (36 off 23) stitched together a 61-run stand in 6.2 overs. It’s something to build on. But problems remain across the squad. Unfortunately, things just got worse for CSK —captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is out of IPL 2025 with an injury. MS Dhoni will take over the leadership for the rest of the season. It's a major setback, considering Gaikwad had been their most dependable batter. Rahul Tripathi is expected to slot into the playing XI.
Without Gaikwad, Conway and Ravindra need to step up early. If they don’t, the pressure will fall squarely on the middle order.
All eyes will be on Shivam Dube after his lively 42 off 27 in the last match. Dhoni also chipped in with a late burst—27 off 12. Now that he's captain again, his impact with the bat will matter more than ever. But outside of those two, Chennai just don’t have enough punch to close out matches. Hoping for fireworks from a 43-year-old Dhoni or asking Jadeja and Ashwin to finish games regularly isn’t a sustainable approach.
The bowling hasn’t helped their case either. Khaleel Ahmed’s been sharp with the new ball, grabbing 10 wickets at an 8.25 economy. You can almost count on him to strike early. Noor Ahmad has stood out as well, leading the team with 11 wickets at 8.33. He’ll be a big factor at Chidambaram.
But the rest have underdelivered. Ashwin and Jadeja have struggled to keep runs down or make breakthroughs, and Pathirana’s been hit-or-miss while giving away too many.
Conway is not a typical six hitter, he is more of a class batter who relies on timing to get his runs. But he can be equally desrtuctive and clear the ropes with ease. So far this season he is averaging one six per match. So expect Conway to clear the ropes at least once against KKR.
Conway scored a valiant half century (69 runs) against PBKS but couldn't take CSK over the line. At Chennai, Conway has scored 403 runs in 9 matches, averaging 57.57. With Ruturaj Gaikwas ruled out, Conway has additional responsbility at the top of the order and we back him to come good against KKR.

Kolkata Knight Riders have had a stop-start season so far, with two wins and three losses. Just when it feels like they’ve turned a corner, they slip up again. In their last outing, they came close to chasing down a massive 239 at home, falling short by just four runs. It was a match they’d feel they should’ve won, especially after cruising at 162-2 in 13 overs before collapsing under pressure.
That said, the batting effort was still promising. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with a fluent 61 off 35, while Venkatesh Iyer (45 off 29) and Sunil Narine (30 off 13) chipped in with useful cameos. Rinku Singh’s 38* off 15 at the back end gave them a chance, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Their batting looks solid on paper, though Quinton de Kock’s patchy form hasn’t helped their cause. Andre Russell hasn't found his rhythm with the bat either, and Ramandeep Singh has struggled to get going.
Their bowling took a beating in that high-scoring game, but the surface at Chidambaram Stadium should work in their favor. Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine could make a big impact with their combined eight overs. Moeen Ali might also slot into the XI, likely replacing Spencer Johnson, adding another spin option and some depth to the batting.
Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana have had their moments, especially Vaibhav. Russell might not be firing with the bat, but his slower deliveries could be effective on this track.
Ajinkya Rahane is averaging 3.4 fours per match this season. He is striking at 160 this season and a completely aggressive approach, which has paid of well for him so far. As he bats in the top three he is more likely to bat atleast a couple of overs in the powerplay where the chanes of htting boundaries are high and he is also a good player of spin, who can find gaps with ease.
Rahane has scores of 61, 38, 11, 18 & 56. He is in good form and has led KKR well with the bat in the top order. He played the last couple of seasons for CSK and will be well aware of the conditions at Chepauk. Though his stats and averages (15.68) might be low, given his current form, we back him to score over 23 runs.

Spin will be king at Chepauk again, with the surface slowing down considerably as the game progresses. Batsmen will need to capitalize during powerplays before the ball softens and starts gripping. Most overs will likely go to spinners in these slow conditions.
Weather-wise, players can expect standard Chennai heat and humidity under clear skies.

High TurnChepauk tends to produce first-innings scores around 160. Out of the three matches played here in IPL 2025, the biggest total so far came from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who put up 196-7 against CSK and won that one by 50 runs. The pitch should play slow again, offering plenty for the spinners. A first-innings target in the 170-180 range would put the batting side in a solid position.
We back the home team, Chennai Super Kings to win the coin toss in match 25 of TATA IPL 2025.
The average total match score at Chennai this season is 332. The home team CSK has faltered to score runs on a good surface in the last two matches especially while chasing. But CSK did much better in their last outing against PBKS. Expect a moderate scoring match and the total aggregate score to be over 349 runs.
Recent results at Chepauk favor the team that bats first - they've won the last two IPL 2025 contests at this venue. The surface tends to get slower as the game progresses, creating tougher conditions for chasing teams in the second innings.
Games between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are rarely dull. CSK tend to get the better of KKR at Chepauk, but with two home losses already, that advantage feels weaker this season. And now, with Gaikwad, their most consistent batsman across the last few seasons, out of the tournament, things have become tougher for the men in yellow. KKR haven’t been flawless either, yet they’ve stayed competitive in most games. The pitch should work better for their bowlers, especially when it comes to slowing things down in the middle overs. Chennai need their batters up top to click and their bowlers to hold it together. Otherwise, KKR look like the safer bet in this matchup.
Kolkata Knight Riders are our picks for the winners of this match.
