The Hobart Hurricanes and the Perth Scorchers face off for the first time in the T20 Spring Challenge.
Both teams have shown glimpses of their potential but have also struggled for consistency. And that’s understandable with several players from both squads away on national duty. The Hurricanes have been boosted by the impressive form of Lizelle Lee, who has been a standout performer with the bat. Their bowling attack has also shown signs of improvement, particularly against the Adelaide Strikers. However, they will need to continue their strong performances to challenge champion teams.
The Scorchers, led by Chloe Piparo, have shown resilience in their recent matches. Despite their inconsistent batting, they have managed to secure wins thanks to certain individuals stepping up. Their bowling attack has been solid, with Charis Bekker in particular making a significant impact. The head-to-head record heavily favors the Scorchers, who have dominated the Hurricanes in previous encounters. However, this is a new season, and both teams will be eager to make their mark and secure a victory.
This match promises to be exciting, with both teams looking to improve their positions in the standings.
With just two more matches to go, these sides know well that the outcome of this match could determine where they finish in the race for the playoffs.

Hobart Hurricanes, despite putting 169 on board, couldn’t stop Melbourne Renegades chasing down the target in their first match.
Batting first, the experienced top order of the Hurricanes failed to get a move on, but Heather Graham and Tabatha Saville, with a quickfire 30 each, finished their innings with a flourish. An early wicket in the second over uplifted their hopes of defending 170, but they couldn’t quite work out how to keep the Renegades top order under sustained pressure. The Melbourne team kept attacking and got over the line in the last over to take a thrilling 5 wicket win.
But the Hurricanes bowling finally came together against Adelaide Strikers. They bowled a whole lot better and got stuck to their plans, never allowing Strikers batters to get their eye in.
All six bowlers who came on to bowl returned with at least a wicket, with Nicol Carey and Molly Strano in particular picking up six wickets between them to restrict the Strikers to under 140.
The Hurricanes chase floundered with them losing Ruth Johnston, Nicola Carey and Elyse Villani in the first 3 overs.
But Lizelle Lee decided to drop the anchor and kept playing her natural attacking game, finding boundaries at will to keep the scoreboard ticking over. She broke the back of the Striker’s bowlers and brought up a century in a canter. The South African ended up scoring 112 of the 141 runs that her team managed.

Captain Chloe Piparo played a captain’s knock, 82 off 47, and made sure the Perth Scorchers picked up their first win of the tournament.
Chasing 170, the Scorchers had a shaky start coming up against the Renegades bowling unit.
With the top order failing, Piparo had a mountain to climb walking in at 3 for 38, but the skipper started slowly but kept plugging away as the wickets kept tumbling down the other end. The right-hand batter paced her innings smartly to ensure the required run rate didn’t go beyond her reach.
Lily Mills and Charis Bekker played a useful hand with the bat, helping the team’s cause. Earlier left arm orthodox bowler Charis Bekker pounced on the opportunity to bowl at the opening pair. She ed for both the openers, not before they had gone on to build a platform — 67 in the 9th over —the Renegades needed in pursuit of a formidable total.
She also made a mark on the field, running out Naomi Stalenberg.
But the rest of the bowling attack had no luck removing the rest of the batters and struggled to prise out a wicket. All-rounder Bhavi Devchand, who picked up a 3-fer against Adelaide Strikers in the opening encounter, had a quiet day with both bat and ball, while top order batters Maddy Darke and Ines Mckeon couldn’t quite contribute like they did against Strikers.

The pitch here has been batting-friendly, in general. Four out of the five high totals so far have come here, which goes to show that batters have had little trouble accelerating the run rate here: 170/, 170/9, 169/5 and 169/3. Bowlers have had their fair share of success picking up clumps of wickets at this ground, with one 4-fer and five 3-fers being ed here. Slight showers are forecast for the morning, but they might ease off by the time the match gets underway.
The match will be played at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide, South Australia. The Hurricanes have had a good time playing here: 3 bowlers from their camp, namely Strano, Carey and Silver-holmes have picked up a 3-fer each while their opener Lee ran amok, posting a match-winning century.
In the four matches to have been played here at this venue in this competition, three were won by teams batting second- a key statistic, surely? The toss winning captain would most likely opt to send the opposition in to have a bat first.
The Hurricanes don’t boast a great head to head record against the Scorchers, but their side for this tournament has a good blend of experience and youth and they look a much-more competent side on this venue than their counterparts from Perth. Hurricanes, to win.
Our bet is on the Hurricanes.
